Since its launch on October 2, 2020, Mahindra Thar SUV sales in India have crossed the important milestone of 200,000 units. As per SIAM wholesale data and Mahindra sales data, total sales of the three-door Thar plus Thar Roxx reached 2.07 lakh units till last month.
From April to October this year, a total of 42,726 units of the 3-door Thar and its larger 5-door version were sold, a year-on-year increase of 19.6% from the 35,723 units sold in the same period last year. This accounts for 65% of Thar’s total sales of 65,246 units in FY24. Demand was further boosted by the introduction of the Thar Roxx, which offered a more versatile and practical option compared to the original 3-door model, attracting a wider customer base.
Mahindra Thar: Engine details
The Thar 4×2 is powered by a 1.5-liter diesel engine that delivers 117 hp and 300 Nm of peak torque. This variant is available only with a six-speed manual gearbox. The Thar 4×4 also comes with a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine mated to a six-speed torque converter automatic that produces 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, the 4×4 version is available with a choice of two engines: a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol (150bhp/300Nm) and a 2.2-litre diesel (130bhp/300Nm). Compared to the 2WD variant, the 4×4 variant comes with six-speed manual and automatic transmission options. The 4×4 also comes with a manual-shift transfer case, and a manual locking differential is available on some models.
Mahindra Thar: Features
This off-roader from Mahindra comes with several notable features including a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, halogen headlights with LED DRLs, steering gear, electrically adjustable air conditioning, removable roof panel and Cruise control system.
In terms of safety, the car is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, hill descent control, rear parking sensors and front seat belt reminder for enhanced protection.

The Thar is available in India with prices ranging from Rs 11.35 lakh to Rs 17.60 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom. Its main competitors are Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. This SUV also serves as an alternative to models like Mahindra Bolero, Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio N.
