Global NCAP updated the security assessment protocol in July 2022, which will be valid until December 2025. Under the new evaluation protocol, cars must comply with stricter safety regulations. According to the new Global NCAP safety assessment protocol, only 9 cars in India currently have a 5-star safety rating.

India’s safest cars according to adult safety ratings

Tata Safari / Harrier received a 5-star rating with an overall adult safety score of 33.05 / 34 points. Global NCAP tested Safari/Harrier in 2023 under a new evaluation protocol. The vehicle tested had safety features such as front airbags, side head curtain airbags, side thorax airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, seatbelt load limiters and seatbelt reminders (SBR). Safari/Harrier also tested ESC and GTR 9 – UN 127 pedestrian protection.

Although Global NCAP has updated safety assessment protocols in India, advanced testing standards such as driver assistance systems remain optional. It includes functions such as AEB Pedestrian, AEB City, AEB Intercity, Speed ​​Assist and Lane Assist. These may be included in the next update to the evaluation protocol.

Talking about the rankings, the Tata Nexon ranks second in the adult safety rating. It has received a 5-star rating with an overall adult safety score of 32.22/34. Nexon was tested in 2018 and 2024. The latest results for 2024 are an improvement over the model tested in 2018. The security features of the Nexon model tested in 2024 are basically similar to those of the Safari/Harrier.

Dzire – Maruti’s safest car

The third safest car in India in terms of adult safety is the all-new Maruti Dzire. This comes as a surprise and an important milestone as the Dzire is the first Maruti car to receive a five-star safety rating. New Dzire scored 31.24/34 points for adult safety. For comparison, Global NCAP also tested an older Dzire under the new evaluation protocol. The older model received a two-star rating for adult safety.

Dzire’s rival Honda Amaze also underwent testing by Global NCAP. It received a two-star rating for adult safety. Other cars that received a five-star rating for adult safety include Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Mahindra Scorpio N and Hyundai Verna.

India’s safest car gets child safety rating

Safari/Harrier tops the list for child safety with a 5-star rating and a score of 45/49. Other cars that received a five-star rating for child safety include Taigun, Kushaq, Virtus, Slavia and Verna. The Kia Carens also received a 5-star child safety rating, although it only received a 3-star rating for adult safety. The New Dzire has a child safety rating of 4 stars, while the Scorpio N has a child safety rating of only 3 stars.

India’s safest cars by overall score

The initial list is the same, starting with Safari/Harrier, then Volkswagen and Skoda cars. The new Maruti Dzire ranks 7th on the list with a total score of 70.44/83 points. For comparison, the highest-rated Safari/Harrier has an overall score of 78.05/83. Hyundai Verna ranks eighth with an overall score of 70.18. Kia Carens ranked 9th with an overall score of 63.07. The car with the lowest GNCAP score is the Maruti Ignis. Earned 20.34/83 points.
