India’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki has held the number one position for a long time. With an extensive product portfolio and a loyal customer base, Maruti’s sales appeal in India is unmatched. As of November 2024, Maruti Suzuki’s total sales (total domestic sales + total export sales) were 1,81,531 units, a year-on-year increase of 10.39% from 1,64,439 units last year. If we look at the sales performance of FTD (April to November) in 2024-25, we get staggering numbers like 14,51,383 units, which is a growth of 2.66% from 14,13,741 units.

Breaking down the numbers, we have to start with Maruti’s Mini segment, which includes the Alto and S-Presso. The segment is declining as SUVs gain in popularity, with 9,750 units sold last month, down from 9,959 last year. FTD, we sold 82,224 units, down from 97,077 units sold last year.

Even Maruti’s compact segment, which includes Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR, saw a slight decline with sales of 61,373 units compared to 64,679 units last year. The saving grace is the mid-size segment consisting of the Ciaz sedan. Although the Ciaz is in the final stage of its life cycle, sales last month were 597 units, up from 278 units last year.

Maruti cars have been growing steadily as a brand in the ‘utility’ segment. Here we can find vehicles such as Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, XL6 and Jimny. The segment sold 59,003 units compared with 49,016 units sold the previous year. FTD, Maruti sold 4,73,312 units as compared to 4,14,631 units sold a year ago.

Being the only company to cater to Vans with the Eeco, Maruti has seen solid sales in this segment, selling 10,589 units last month as against 10,226 units sold a year ago. The company also sells cars in bulk to other brands, including Toyota. Sales to other OEMs last month were 8,660 units, nearly double last year’s 4,822 units.

Maruti exported 28,633 units

On the export front, Maruti Suzuki has come a long way and is working hard to do better. This is evident as the company’s exports increased from 22,950 units last year to 28,633 units in November 2024. Even in the FTD data, we can see a growth from 1,77,443 units last year to 2,10,077 units last month.
