Mazda recalls CX-90 owners 3 times in one day

In all cases, affected cars will require a software update to resolve the issue

  • Mazda is recalling more than 80,000 CX-90 and CX-70 vehicles due to activation issues affecting several safety features.
  • A dashboard malfunction in some of these SUVs may trigger limp mode and illuminate the check engine code.
  • Some CX-90 vehicles may not restart after an idle stop, resulting in a recall to update the hybrid system software.

Mazda plans to promote the high-end hinge mainly to cars such as the three-row CX-90 and its two-row dual-row CX-70. After testing it, we liked its cabin and the power it offered. Of course, we didn’t have to live with one of these, and owners now have to deal with three more recalls.

Flashback #1: Startup Warning System Failure

The largest recall totaled 80,915 vehicles. Of those, 70,974 are 2024 and 2025 model year CX-90s. The rest are CX-70s. All affected SUVs may have an issue where the car displays multiple warning messages when starting.

Mazda says if this happens, the defroster, seat belt warning system and 360-degree camera system may not function properly. Worse, even the PHEV’s high-voltage battery cooling system can fail. Thankfully, the fix is as simple as a software update for the dashboard electronics power supply unit.

Flashback #2: Dashboard Failure and Limp Mode

Next, Mazda will recall 26,533 CX-90 vehicles starting in 2024 due to a malfunction light that illuminates on the dashboard while driving. It also recalled 4,955 2025 CX-70s in the same action. In this case, the car may enter limp mode. It’s worth noting that cars experiencing this condition will often throw a P061B check engine code. This may be a way for the owner to discover the problem. Mazda says dealers can fix the problem simply by reprogramming the PCM and ECM with improved software.

Flashback #3: Hybrid system fails on reboot

Finally, the third recall affects 38,926 2024MY CX-90s. In this case, the car will be unable to restart after the engine stops idling. Mazda says owners may see a “Hybrid System Malfunction” light in the instrument cluster if this issue exists. Again, the dealer can solve the problem by simply reprogramming the PCM and BECM.

So, in summary, in all cases, the dealer will need to reprogram some parts of the car to correct the recall issue. This includes flashing the PCM, DECM, ECU and Dash ESU. As for how much “crossover” — pun intended — there is between the three recalls, it’s still a bit fuzzy. CX-90 owners who want to know if their car is affected can call their local dealer or search for their VIN on the NHTSA website.
