Mazda valve stem seal settlement

Mazda class action lawsuit alleges turbocharged cars use too much oil.

— Class-action lawsuit leads to final judge approval of Mazda’s valve stem sealing solution for popular models equipped with 2.5-liter turbocharged engines.

Mazda settled claims that valve stem seals caused vehicles to use too much oil, forcing customers to add more oil between oil changes.

According to the Mazda Valve Stem Seal Settlement, eight owners who filed lawsuits claimed that their vehicles needed to consume more than eight quarts of oil between recommended oil changes to constitute excessive oil consumption.

It is said that it is normal for Mazda vehicles to consume seven quarts of oil during the recommended oil change interval.

Valve stem seal settlement includes the following turbine vehicles:

  • 2021 Mazda3 (Made in Japan)

  • 2021-2022 Mazda3 (Made in Mexico)

  • 2021-2022 Mazda CX-30 (Made in Mexico)

  • 2021 Mazda Mazda6

  • 2021 Mazda CX-5

  • 2021 Mazda CX-9

Mazda denied all allegations in the lawsuit and denied all wrongdoing but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to end the expensive litigation.

Some owners objected to Mazda’s valve stem sealing solution, arguing it didn’t do enough for customers, but a judge rejected those arguments.
