Starting next May, you may notice police officers across the United States riding their newly issued motorcycles. The new bike from Honda is called the NT1100 Police and has been developed specifically for law enforcement agencies across the United States.
The new motorcycle is lighter and more nimble than the currently used ST1300 and is based on the NT1100 already on the market across Europe. It has the same frame and 1,084 cc two-cylinder engine as the famous Honda Africa Twin. The engine produces 101 hp at 8,500 rpm and 77 lb-ft (104 Nm) of torque at 6,000 rpm, down from the ST1300’s 125 hp and 85 lb-ft (115 Nm). However, the old bike weighed about 705 pounds (320 kg), while the NT1100 Police weighs only 566 pounds (257 kg) with a full tank of fuel.

To make it ready for protection and service, we made several modifications to the bike, including a new protective fairing, adjustable windshield, plush seat, electronic riding aids and new LED lighting. It also comes with a luggage bag, engine guard, document box and seat cover. Individual police forces can customize the bikes with additional parts through approved suppliers.
Combined with the 1,084 cc engine is a six-speed manual transmission with a multi-plate wet clutch. The bike has 17-inch front and rear wheels with 120/70 front and 180/55 rear tires. Showa dampers are fitted front and rear, and braking is provided by four-piston calipers and 310 mm (12.2-inch) discs at the front and single-piston calipers and 256 mm (10-inch) discs at the rear.
One particularly cool feature on this bike is the integrated six-axis IMU, which automatically adjusts the level of anti-lock braking based on how much the bike leans during cornering. It also features customizable torque levels, different riding modes, cruise control and a 6.5-inch touch display.
Agencies will pay $14,499 for each NT1100 they want to add to their fleet, with the first units arriving next May.
“U.S. motorcycle units and mobility officials understand the advantages of two-wheeled vehicles over cars, and we are excited to offer their fleets a new option,” said Colin Miller, public relations manager for American Honda. “One of the main advantages of a police motorcycle is mobility, and the NT1100 Police is unparalleled in this regard. It also offers Honda’s legendary reliability and value – something law enforcement agencies have proven in the past with the police version of the ST1300. Due to its light weight, nimble handling and excellent value, the NT1100 Police is expected to become a popular choice among the U.S. motorcycle force.”
