Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 may be a 500+ HP EV forged V8

Mercedes launched the redesigned CLA yesterday, and new details begin to appear on new details about the upcoming AMG variant. In particular, the CLA 45 can be returned as an electric car package of over 500 ponies.

Mercedes CTO Markus Schäfer told Autocar that while officials were nervous about the upcoming model, they “have built a second pillar in terms of powertrains – the keyword Yasa”. This is not a subtle reference to the axial flux motor developed by Yasa’s subsidiary.

Axial flux motors are expected to be used in high-end models such as AMG SUVs, but not limited to Crème Dela Crème. As Schäfer said, “It is available on all model lines”, the opposite is true.

Other details are limited, but publications suggest that the CLA 45 EV may have a triple-sport powertrain with “advanced torque vectoring attributes.” Insiders also said the car could have over 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS), which would be a significant increase over the current model’s turbocharged 2.0-liter 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which has a 416 hp (310 kW / 422 PS). This brings the CLA 45s to 60 mph (96 km/h) in four seconds.

While the standard model has an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the AMG version will reportedly use “oil-cooled batteries with unique cylindrical cells and chemical properties to increase energy density.” We can also expect an active rear wing as well as the so-called “V8 mode” that replicates the sound of the roaring V8.
