Mercedes unveils a new convertible and a high-performance coupe-SUV
Mercedes-Benz India has launched two new models in the Indian market – AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe, priced at Rs 1.11 crore (ex-showroom) and CLE 300 Cabriolet, priced at Rs 1.1 crore (ex-showroom). These vehicles are the latest additions to the Mercedes-Benz diversified product portfolio, catering to the needs of both high-performance SUVs and stylish convertible enthusiasts.
The AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe made its global debut in September 2023 and features significant changes compared to its predecessor. The new model replaces the previous 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with a more compact and efficient 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine equipped with 48V mild-hybrid technology.
Despite the downsized engine, the GLC 43 still delivers 421 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This allows the coupe to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, sends power to all four wheels, and comes standard with rear-wheel steering, high-performance brakes, speed-sensitive steering, and adjustable suspension dampers.
In terms of design, the GLC 43 is distinguished from the standard GLC by adopting AMG-specific elements. These include a unique grille, sportier front and rear bumpers, AMG side skirts and a prominent rear diffuser with quad exhaust pipes. The coupe’s sloping roofline and large alloy wheels up to 21 inches give it an added dynamic stance.
The GLC 43’s interior is the same luxurious style as the standard GLC, but with a sportier feel. It features an AMG-specific steering wheel, Nappa leather seats, AMG-branded pedals and floor mats, and illuminated door sills. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment system are enhanced with unique AMG graphics. The car also features a 710W, 15-speaker Burmester sound system, a 12.3-inch driver display, and an 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe is positioned to compete with the BMW X3 M40i in the Indian market, which is priced at Rs 87.70 lakh (ex-showroom).
Apart from the AMG GLC 43, Mercedes-Benz has also launched the CLE 300 Cabriolet in India. The CLE Cabriolet is built on Mercedes’ Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform, which it shares with the existing C-Class and the upcoming new-generation E-Class. This gives the CLE a longer and more refined profile compared to the older C-Class and E-Class coupes.
The CLE Cabriolet’s design is inspired by the outgoing E-Class coupe and convertible, with a large grille, long bonnet and an automatic multi-layer fabric hood that folds neatly into the boot. The Indian-bound model gets the AMG Line trim, which includes sportier design elements, especially the bumpers.
Inside, the CLE 300 Cabriolet shares much of the same layout as the C-Class, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and an 11.9-inch vertical infotainment display. The 2+2 seating layout includes newly designed front seats with integrated headrests, heating and four-way lumbar support as standard. Notably, the CLE Cabriolet is the first Mercedes convertible to come standard with independent head airbags for rear passengers. The soft top can be opened or closed in 20 seconds at speeds up to 60 km/h.
Under the hood, the CLE 300 Cabriolet is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine mated to a 48V mild-hybrid system. The unit produces 258 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h.
The CLE Cabriolet faces competition from the likes of the BMW Z4 and is priced at Rs 9.09 lakh (ex-showroom) and is a slightly more affordable alternative to the Porsche 718 Boxster.
