Since October 2022, the Mercedes-AMG One has been the fastest production car on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, with a lap time of 6:35.183. Two years after setting that record, the automaker returned to the Green Hell and broke its own record with a better lap time of 6.29.090.

The electric supercar, which features F1-derived technology, is driven by DTM driver Maro Engel, who managed to improve his lap time by more than five seconds. This makes the AMG One the first production car to break the 6 minutes and 30 seconds barrier on this famous circuit, entering the racing realm.

The new record occurred on September 23, 2024 at 6:56 pm. The track is completely dry and the temperature is 15 degrees (59°F) and asphalt temperature 20 (68°F).

Maro Engel has revealed that conditions during his initial record attempt in 2022 were not ideal as certain sections of the track were “still a bit wet”. The Mercedes-AMG One record-setting race car has “maximum camber values within delivery tolerances” and is in a more track-friendly “Race Plus” drive mode. This mode lowers the front axle by 37 mm (1.5 in) and the rear axle by 30 mm (1.2 in), while taking advantage of active aerodynamics to unleash the full 1,049 hp (782 kW / 1,063 hp) of the 1.6 engine. liter turbo V6 engine and four electric motors.

After practicing on the simulator, the driver cleverly made use of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) to compress the hybrid system’s battery pack in the most efficient way. The supercar is equipped with standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires developed specifically for the AMG One.

Time will tell whether any other supercar manufacturer will challenge Mercedes-AMG’s record in the Green Hell. Although its rival, the Aston Martin Valkyrie, has entered production at the end of 2021, it has yet to be officially attempted. Other entrants could include the Koenigsegg Jesko Attack, Czinger 21C and the upcoming McLaren W1.
