Mercedes-AMG prepares innovative electric supercar

  • The new model will use batteries from Sila Nanotechnologies and axial flux Yasa motors.
  • The new AMG.EA architecture will underpin the electric supercar.
  • Design inspiration will come from the Vision One-11 concept.

Last year’s Mercedes Vision One-11 concept car is expected to spawn a new electric supercar from the brand, possibly launching by the end of the decade. It will be the company’s first battery-electric supercar since the short-lived Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric Drive and is expected to outshine the F1-powered AMG One.

The new model will likely be based on the automaker’s AMG.EA architecture, which powers vehicles of different lengths and wheelbases. The platform will first be used in the electric replacement of the current AMG GT 4-door and uses an advanced 800-volt architecture.

The technology previewed by the Vision One-11 is expected to make its way into production models. For example, the new supercar will be equipped with an advanced lithium-ion battery pack whose cylindrical cells come from the US company Sila Nanotechnologies, which Mercedes has been working with for many years. It will also use an advanced axial flux electric motor developed by British company Yasa, which was acquired by Mercedes in 2021.

Autocar reports that these new disc engines are about half the size and weight of the engines currently used by AMG. These motors will be able to produce up to 489 horsepower and 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) of torque, despite weighing only 53 pounds (24 kilograms).

We don’t know much about Mercedes-AMG’s upcoming all-electric Porsche Mission X supercar rival, including how much it will cost or how many units will be produced. It’s unclear how much of the car’s design will borrow from the retro Vision One-11, which itself was inspired by the brand’s C111 experimental concepts from the 1960s and ’70s.

Whatever the new car looks like, CEO Michael Schiebe is confident customers will embrace electric powertrains.

“Customers who come to the brand because of the V8 don’t come because they just want a big engine,” he said. “They come because they like the technology we have in the car. So when it comes to electric driving, I’m pretty sure they’re going to adopt this new technology because it’s going to be the latest and greatest technology you can get. “
