Mercedes-AMG previews new electric super SUV

Mercedes-AMG is developing a custom SUV said to feature a four-motor powertrain with an output of more than 1,000 horsepower

Mercedes-AMG has just released a teaser of its first all-electric SUV, slated to debut in 2026. The model is built on a dedicated AMG platform and aims to go beyond the typical formula of adding special touches to a standard Mercedes SUV. Instead, it was designed from the ground up, with AMG’s performance DNA at its core.

It will be a bespoke AMG product rather than a performance derivative of a Mercedes SUV, developed entirely “in-house” on the AMG.EA architecture. The brand’s insistence on “AMG first, all-electric second” hints that the brand may be rethinking what an electric performance SUV can actually do.

The trailer sketch gives us some clues. It displays a muscular silhouette, with a long hood, aggressive fender lines and a wide roofline that’s more Purosangue-esque than you’d expect from a German SUV. Still, it’s less ostentatious than a Ferrari – AMG has always preferred a slightly more understated approach to menace.

The AMG.EA platform uses an 800V architecture and is expected to underpin the upcoming as-yet-unnamed SUV and electric successor to the 4-door AMG GT. Both electric cars will be equipped with lightweight axial flux electric motors, custom-developed for AMG by British company Yasa.

The four-motor unit is expected to produce more than 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS), offering all-wheel drive and advanced torque vectoring capability. The model will also benefit from four-wheel steering, active suspension and AMG-specific batteries.

The SUV is expected to be similar in size to the 2022 Vision AMG concept, with a length of approximately 5.1 meters (200 inches) and a wheelbase of over 3 meters (118 inches). This gives it a larger footprint than the combustion engine-powered Mercedes-AMG GLE 63, bringing it closer to the size of the all-electric EQS ​​SUV flagship.

On the face of it, its competitors span both ends of the propulsion spectrum. It will face off against petrol-powered heavyweights like the Porsche Cayenne GT and Aston Martin DBX, as well as hybrid and all-electric competitors like the BMW XM, Lamborghini Urus and Lotus Eletre.

We’ll likely get more information from AMG in the coming months as the teaser campaign progresses. The company has confirmed that development trials will begin this winter.
