Mercedes-AMG Super SUV: What we know about the 1,000 hp EV

Last month, Mercedes-AMG previewed the all-electric super SUV currently under development. This new model is being developed with AMG’s first in-house electric sedan, and like that car, it has also encountered court disputes. After all, many enthusiasts are used to the AMG model with a thumping V8 engine, which is why the four-cylinder hybrid C 63 is a failure. However, German brands believe electric is the future and it is cooking something quite special.

The prototypes discovered by our spy photographers, along with the official images released by Mercedes, are covered and camouflage covering, obscuring most of the design details. However, there are rumors that the electric car has the potential to earn the GT SUV moniker, which will have many similarities with its sedan counterparts, which tends to draw inspiration from the 2022 Mercedes Vision AMG concept.

With that in mind, artist Nikita Chuyko created illustrations for Kolesa based on AMG Taycan Fighter’s tests and recent renderings, and provided the look of the new SUV. If it ends up like these images, it will certainly stand out in the Mercedes roster, although we don’t quite believe it’s for all the right reasons.

The front of the SUV shown here is dominated by a faux grille that can be expected in the EV, while the headlights are connected by light strips. They also wore Triangle Star DRL and came to many new Mercedes models.

Because it’s as interesting as the front of this render, the backend is even more so. Take clues from the styling of the AMG concept, which has a wraparound LED taillight design that reminds me of the Kia EV6, an interesting choice, although it works better on the Mercedes side.

Strength, performance and ambition

Away from the design, the GT SUV is expected to reflect the size of the 2022 Vision AMG concept, with a length of about 5.1 meters (200 inches) and a wheelbase pushing over 3 meters (118 inches). This is bigger than the fuel-consuming AMG GLE 63, making it the same as the flagship of the all-electric EQS ​​SUV.

Under the skin, the new AMG electric SUV will be built on the brand’s proprietary AMG.EA platform, which features an 800-volt electrical system for faster charging and higher efficiency. It will also be a newly developed axial munition motor from Yasa, UK, which may provide over 1,000 horsepower. This power will make it a serious contender for other electric crossovers, such as the Lotus eletre r, which fires 905 hp.

A release date has not been announced yet, but the production version may debut in 2026, with sales starting later that year or early 2027, depending on the market, just before its Porsche K1 competitor. It is, in theory, a serious contender for any luxury electric crossover, but its commercial success depends not only on its technology or power figure, but also on its design.
