Mercedes-Benz recalls 20,000 vehicles over fire risk

When the vehicle is parked, a short circuit could cause a fire.

— Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly 20,000 vehicles due to a risk of electrical shorts and fires.

During Mercedes’ August 2022 recall of vehicles for the same issue, the transmission wiring harness connection may not have been properly repaired.

Incorrect recall repairs could corrode electrical connectors and cause electrical shorts.

“In this case, water could enter the connector over time and cause a short circuit. A short circuit could lead to thermal overloading of the connector while the vehicle is parked. Therefore, a risk of fire cannot be ruled out.” Mercedes

The automaker says the driver may be alerted to the problem if the yellow battery indicator illuminates and/or a “4MATIC FAULT” warning message appears on the instrument cluster.

A total of nearly 2,700 vehicles are being recalled in Canada.

All owners of vehicles involved in the 2022 Mercedes recall will need to make new repairs.

Once the recall letter is mailed on August 13, 2024, Mercedes dealers will replace the two-part wiring harness and connector.
