Mercedes-Maybach S-Class recalled in India due to fire risk

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class recalled due to ECU software issue

Mercedes-Benz India has recalled some models of its flagship luxury sedan, the Maybach S-Class, citing potential fire risks. The recall affects specific models of the seventh-generation W223 Maybach S-Class sold from 2021 onwards. The recall stems from a software issue in the engine control unit (ECU), which does not meet the latest specifications.

Recall details

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) vehicle recall database, a total of 386 Maybach S-Class vehicles were produced between April 29, 2021, and January 27, 2024, as well as one S-Class vehicle produced on April 21, In 2021, it will be affected. The recall list highlights that an ECU software issue could cause exhaust gas temperatures to rise above safe levels. This increase can damage critical components, including engine wiring harnesses and catalytic converters, and in extreme cases, result in unexpected loss of propulsion or increased risk of fire.

Manufacturer’s response

Mercedes-Benz India said it will directly contact the owners of the affected vehicles to arrange an appointment for inspection and rectification. Necessary software updates will be provided free of charge to ensure that the problem is effectively resolved.

Previous recalls

This is the third recall of the 2024 S-Class sedan in India. Earlier this year, the automaker recalled 586 S-Class sedans due to a risk in the fuel pump shut-off mechanism. The latest recall adds to a growing list of precautionary measures designed to address safety and compliance issues.

Industry impact

Recalls of luxury cars such as the Maybach S-Class highlight the automotive industry’s growing focus on vehicle safety and regulatory compliance. While such recalls may cause temporary inconvenience to vehicle owners, they also demonstrate the manufacturer’s commitment to proactively address potential risks.

Affected owners are encouraged to contact their nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz service center to quickly resolve the issue and ensure the continued safety and reliability of their vehicles.
