“You don’t want to hike across town”

The Miami Beach Convention Center is a LEED Silver-certified green building that includes a grand ballroom, 500,000 square feet of flexible exhibit space, four smaller ballrooms, 84 breakout rooms, and outdoor terraces and parks. The convention center recently underwent a $640 million renovation and redesign, making the headquarters hotel’s issues even more pressing because the city currently doesn’t have the capacity to host the large conventions it would be interested in hosting at the newly remodeled venue.

As one commissioner said at a June meeting on the topic, “I know we have a large number of hotels in the city that are very attractive to people who are fortunate enough not to be connected to the convention center, but I I’ll tell you, after going to a million different trade shows, you don’t want to be trekking across town when you’re… setting up your booth or bringing samples in or making sure you’re at those meetings at 7 a.m. before the show opens. Hopefully, the sooner we can get the lift down, across the courtyard and to the convention center, the better off we will be as a city.”
