In terms of mid-size SUV sales, Mahindra Scorpio/N and XUV700 occupy the top two positions, accounting for a combined 76% market share
In our two previous reports, we listed sales in the sub-4 meter SUV and compact SUV (4.2 million-4.4 million) segments through October 2024, both segments showed Excellent year-over-year and sequential growth. Similarly, some models in the mid-size SUV segment are also in high demand in October 2024. However, other car models also saw significant drops in demand.
Mid-size SUV sales in October 2024
In October 2024, total mid-size SUV sales were 34,033 units. This represents a year-on-year increase of 8.54% from the 31,354 units sold in October 2023. The month-on-month sales volume also increased by 6.64% from the 31,915 units sold in September 2024.
Mahindra Scorpio/N topped the list with sales of 15,677 units in October 2024. The sales volume increased by 15.46% year-on-year from 13,578 units in October 2023, occupying 46.06% of the market share. Sales also increased by 8.58% month-on-month compared with 14,438 units sold in September 2024. The Scorpio/N also ranks 8th on the list of top 10 selling cars and SUVs in October 2024.
The XUV700 also comes from the Mahindra stable. In October 2024, its sales increased by 12.24% year-on-year to 10,435 vehicles, compared with 9,297 vehicles sold in the same month last year. The XUV700 currently occupies 30.66% of the market share, with sales increasing by 8.18% month-on-month as of September 2024, with sales exceeding 9,646 units. The new Hyundai Alcazar facelift launched in September 2024 played an important role in the increase in sales, with sales reaching 2,204 units in October. Sales in 2024 increased by 19.98% year-on-year from 1,837 units in October 2023. However, sales fell 18.73% month-on-month from 2,712 units in September 2024.
Ranked fourth is Tata Safari. Sales in the past month were 2,086 units, an increase of 55.67% from 1,340 units in October 2023. Sales increased by 746 units. Positive month-on-month sales growth was also achieved, up 26.89% from the 1,644 units sold in September 2024. Tata Harrier followed closely, with sales of 1,947 units last month, a year-on-year increase of 2.69% and a month-on-month increase of 21.69%. 1,896 units and 1,600 units were sold in October 2023 and September 2024 respectively. This also increased the market share from 5.01% to 5.72% month-on-month.
Mid-size SUV sales decline year-on-year
Since then, mid-size SUV sales have declined year-on-year due to demand. MG Hector/Plus sales fell 54.72% year-on-year to 1,224 units, down from 2,703 units sold in October 2023. As of September 2024, its month-on-month sales also dropped by 11.30% from 1,380 units.
Jeep Compass sales fell 40.70% year-on-year and 23.87% month-on-month to 236 units. Hyundai Tucson’s sales also fell by 30.20% year-on-year to 202 units sold in October 2023, and month-on-month sales increased by 43.88% from 98 units sold in September 2024. Sales of the Volkswagen Tiguan fell 19.39% year-on-year and increased 8.14% month-on-month to 79 units, while Citroen C5 Aircross also fell 20% year-on-year to 4 units, although sales in September 2024 increased 300% month-on-month to 1 unit sold.
