Millionaire now owns Richard Mille watch worth $274,000

This high-end chronograph features a carbon fiber case and papaya orange rubber strap and is limited to 500 pieces.

Shortly after the launch of the McLaren W1 hybrid supercar, Richard Mille unveiled an equally innovative chronograph inspired by the W1 that seemed designed to make our bank accounts weep. The launch marks the fourth collaboration between McLaren and Richard Mille since they began working together in early 2016.

The official name of the watch is RM 65-01 McLaren Automatic Rattrapante Chronograph W1, which uses Richard Mille’s highest-performance automatic chronograph movement, oscillating 36,000 times per hour. It can record elapsed time as low as a tenth of a second and features a rapid-winding system that can quickly charge a 60-hour power reserve.

Visually, the chronograph’s carbon fiber case is supposed to mimic the W1’s bodywork. Designers at Richard Mille showed off early clay models of the W1 to analyze its shape and took inspiration from the high waistline and chamfered doors to create a special carbon fiber bezel complete with a satin finish and polished grade 5 titanium Metal.

The thinnest part of the upper bezel of RM 65-01 is only five tenths of a millimeter, making it the thinnest model ever produced by Richard Mille. The chronograph’s skeletonized titanium dial is also inspired by the W1 wheel, while the crown is based on the splines on the W1 drive shaft. There are also a lot of papaya orange elements on the watch, including the rubber strap.

“Producing the fourth watch in the series made us feel that Richard Mille and McLaren are working very well together,” said Julien Boillat, technical director of cases at Richard Mille. “We both use the most high-tech materials to achieve the highest technical specifications, ergonomics are as important to us as they are to them, and our design language really seems to have come together. The interaction between our two teams and the The partnership has become very strong.”
