Mitsubishi reveals another hybrid SUV, but won’t show up

Mitsubishi ASX size xforce The SUV now has the option of Southeast Asian hybrid, but it is not too close to Australia.

The gasoline-powered Xforce revealed that it is now equipped with a hybrid powertrain borrowed from the larger Xpander HEV (hybrid car) People Mover.

However, this is unlikely to come to Australia, as Mitsubishi has previously confirmed that XFORCE does not comply with local Australian Design Rules (ADR) regulations.

Powering the Xforce HEV is a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, a high-voltage battery and a two-speed drive disc (transmission).

Mitsubishi does not provide power output, although the related Xpander HEV produces 70kW.

This is much less than the ASX for sale in Australia, which has developed from 110kW (2.0 liters) to 123kW (2.4 liters), and also lost 77kW output from non-Hybrid Xforce.

The drive axle is “newly developed”, and Mitsubishi’s statement includes “the new motor disconnect function that disconnects the motor with a high-speed drive shaft”, thus allowing the Xforce HEV to use the claimed 4.1L/100km.

Xforce HEV can also be powered in pure electric mode, saving more fuel when low-speed engines are usually minimally efficient.

The carry-on device includes a 12.3-inch touch screen infotainment screen and an 8.0-inch driver display, the former can be set up to mimic the legendary Pajero Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-Off-roce.

Wireless phone charging function, as well as USB-A and USB-C ports for front and rear passengers.

Like the gasoline-only model, Mitsubishi claims that the Xforce can hold 21 600mm plastic bottles throughout its cabin – a boastful automaker is less willing or able to make it.

XFORCE also comes with front and rear parking sensors, six airbags and a safety sensing advanced driver assistance system for Mitsubishi Electric, which includes important safety technologies such as automatic emergency braking (AEB) and blind spot monitoring.

Still, it is not a replacement for the ASX currently found in the Australian showroom.

Earlier this year, Mitsubishi announced that the current ASX will be ruled for not meeting the new AEB performance requirements, although the nameplate will continue to be used in a new CASTUR version.
