New California law targets speeding, street driving in 2025

  • California’s new law will take effect on January 1, 2025, affecting street takeovers and speeding.
  • Speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway will result in civil penalties ranging from $50 to $500.
  • Sideshow participants could face having their driver’s licenses suspended for up to six months.

California is about to repeal a slew of new laws targeting its citizens. Before these laws take effect, the state wants residents to know what to expect. Drivers in particular need to be aware of two major changes, including those regarding speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway and how police now handle street takeovers and juggling.

Speaking of illegal takeovers and juggling, the state now authorizes harsher and broader penalties as of July 1, 2025. Specifically, police can now more easily seize vehicles. Additionally, those who aid or watch sideshows or street takeovers may go to jail or face hefty fines. For example, simply participating in a sideshow can result in up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. The state also has the power to suspend a person’s driver’s license for 90 days to 6 months if he or she is found guilty of participating in a sideshow.

Other new bills expand the definition of speed contests, takeovers or sideshows to include activities that occur at on-street parking facilities. especially. California even has an entire bill in place just to clarify that “sideshow” is a separate term for street takeovers so there’s no legal confusion when a conviction is at stake.

“Sideshows are reckless, criminal activity that endangers our communities. We see too many people killed or injured in these events. Today we are sending a clear message to anyone considering attending or participating in a sideshow: Tougher rules will be implemented Penalties, including possible loss of your vehicle,” said Governor Newsom.

Another bill specifically focuses on speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway. It enables the state to install five new automated speed cameras on PCH. The government said it would focus on “high-risk areas such as school zones,” but the final locations of the cameras have yet to be determined. Those caught speeding on camera face civil penalties.

People speeding 11 to 15 mph over the speed limit will pay $50. More than 15 mph but less than 25 mph will result in a $100 fine. People who go 26 mph over the limit will pay $200 unless their total speed is 100 mph or more. In this case, they will pay $500.

Will all these new measures make a difference? Only time will tell, but there is no doubt that California will be back at it again in a year with new legislation aimed at further cracking down on illegal immigration.
