New generation Toyota Fortuner SUV – when to expect it?

Toyota Fortuner is one of the most popular premium full-size SUVs in India. The model has always been popular for its commanding road presence, rugged looks, high ground clearance and on-road performance. The Fortuner was first launched in 2009 and quickly became a sensation. It remains India’s best-selling luxury SUV with high resale value and strong performance. The first generation was facelifted in 2012, followed by a replacement in 2016 and a mid-life refresh in 2020.

Now, the Fortuner is about to enter its third generation, which will see sweeping changes in its design, features and engine mechanics. While an official release schedule has yet to be confirmed, reports suggest it could hit the market in 2025 or 2026. Here are all the key details we know so far about the new generation Toyota Fortuner.

New turbo gasoline engine

Reports suggest that the new Fortuner will be equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine, which will also power other new-generation Toyota sports cars, including the Celica and MR2. The motor will be tuned to provide different power and torque outputs. The new-generation Hilux pick-up is likely to be launched in a version producing 300bhp and 400Nm of torque, while a more powerful version producing 400bhp and 549Nm of torque will power other Toyota vehicles. A more powerful version will also be launched, offering a massive 600 horsepower. Check out: Toyota’s first electric car is here – Toyota City Cruiser EV

It is not yet clear which version of the new turbo-petrol engine will be used in the next-generation Toyota Fortuner. This new petrol engine is likely to replace the existing 204bhp, 2.8L turbodiesel engine.

Increase efficiency by 30%

Toyota’s new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is said to be 30% more efficient and has a lower carbon footprint. The company says the new engine will be nearly 10 percent smaller than other engines while delivering more power.

New platforms, ADAS and more!

With the upgrade, Fortuner will transition from the IMV platform to the new TNGA-F platform. Toyota will also equip this SUV with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) technology called Toyota Safety Suite. The system will offer advanced safety features such as dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, pre-collision system, active driving assist and road sign assist. Other features such as vehicle stability control and hydraulic steering (replacing the current electric power assist) will also be available.

Major design changes

The design changes of the new generation Toyota Fortuner will be significant. It is expected to feature a newly designed grille, revised headlamp clusters with integrated daytime running lights, and tweaked front and rear bumpers. The side profile is likely to include heavier cladding and new dual-tone alloy wheels.
