Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) started its operations in India in 1996 with a groundbreaking ceremony. The Santro was the first product and was a huge success. Over the years, Hyundai India has achieved strong growth and has amassed millions of loyal customers.

Celebrating a journey into modern India

Hyundai Motor shared a video on its social media, describing its journey in India and its strong connection with the Indian people and diverse culture. When Hyundai entered India, it had to face competitors such as Maruti, Premier, Hindustan Motors, Mahindra and Tata. International brands such as Daewoo, Opel, Ford and Honda also entered. However, the main competitor at that time was Maruti Suzuki, which had almost monopolized the Indian market.

Empowering India: Hyundai'S Journey Of Excellence

Hyundai’s first product, the Santro, became an instant bestseller. In just a few months, Hyundai became the second largest car manufacturer in India. The company still holds this title today, thanks to some very good products. For example, there are more than a million Creta SUVs on the road. Other popular products include the Grand i10 Nios, i20, Verna, Venue, Exter and Alcazar. Hyundai’s electric vehicle portfolio currently has the Ioniq 5 compact crossover SUV.

Modern manufacturing strength

HMIL’s first plant was commissioned in Chennai. Over the years, the plant’s capacity and capabilities were continuously expanded. It played a key role in the company’s success. With the growing demand for Hyundai vehicles in the domestic and export markets, Hyundai invested in a second manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra. This plant was acquired from General Motors.

Hyundai Motor has committed to invest Rs 6,000 crore in Maharashtra. The Talegaon plant has an annual production capacity of 130,000 units. Hyundai will start operations at the plant in 2025. The expansion of the Talegaon plant will also increase capacity. Counting all its manufacturing plants in India, Hyundai Motor aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 1 million units.

Hyundai India has produced over 10 million vehicles till date. Entities like Hyundai Motor India’s Engineering R&D Centre in Hyderabad and Transformation Centre in Gurgaon have played a vital role in this success story.
