New Kaylaq lands in India, Skoda’s smallest SUV yet

Skoda chooses the name of the new model with the help of fans through a social media campaign

New Kaylaq lands in India, Skoda's smallest SUV yet
  • Skoda’s entry-level SUV for the Indian market is named Kylaq.
  • The new model will be smaller than the Kushaq, measuring less than 4 meters in length.
  • It will use the MQB A0 IN architecture and may be equipped with a 1.0 TSI engine.

Skoda’s upcoming small SUV for the Indian market has a name: Kylaq, chosen via an online vote. The Kylaq will slot below the India-made Kushaq as the new entry-level model in the Volkswagen Group brand’s local range, both in terms of size and price.

Initially teased in February 2024 via a front-end sketch, the Skoda Kylaq has now been revealed in profile in the latest teaser, showcasing the familiar silhouette and roof rails. The SUV will be the first Indian model to feature Skoda’s modern three-dimensional design language, highlighted by its unique LED lighting signature.

Earlier spy photos from India confirmed that the Kylaq will be very compact, with a short rear overhang and split LED headlights. At less than 4 meters (157.5 inches) long, it will be Skoda’s smallest model worldwide, even more compact than the 4,225 mm (166 in) Kushaq, 4,108 mm (161.7 in) Fabia and 4.1 m (161.4 in) Epiq EV.

The new model will be built on the locally developed MQB A0 IN platform, the same as the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun SUVs, as well as the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus sedans. Under the hood is expected to be a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with 113 hp (85 kW / 115 PS). Skoda will likely offer a choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, both of which will send drive to the front wheels.

Skoda claims that more than 200,000 people participated in the social media campaign to help it choose the name for the new model. Kylaq (derived from the Sanskrit word for crystal) was chosen from 10 finalists. Unsurprisingly, all the names start with K and end with Q, in line with Skoda’s strategy for naming ICE-powered SUVs such as the Kushaq, Kamiq, Karoq and Kodiaq.

The Skoda Kylaq is scheduled to debut and go on sale in 2025. It is not clear whether the city SUV will be launched in other markets outside India. Local competitors include Citroen New C3, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Suzuki Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV3XO, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
