New MG Astor Hybrid officially unveiled ahead of world debut

The biggest buzz around the new MG Astor (named ZS in certain markets) is its hybrid powertrain, which comprises an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine and an electric motor.

The updated MG Astor, dubbed ZS in some markets, will make its global debut on August 28 and is equipped with a self-charging hybrid propulsion system (HEV) that combines an Atkinson cycle petrol engine and an electric motor. The unit uses a 1.83kWh NCM lithium-ion battery, which enables pure electric operation over short distances. The facelifted SUV will feature a front-wheel drive system and a 3-speed automatic transmission. For those who don’t know, the Astor is currently offered in Spain with two engine options: a 1.0-litre T-GDI and a 1.5-litre VTI-tech. The former produces 109bhp and 160Nm, while the latter produces 104.5bhp and 141Nm. Available transmission options include a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual. New MG Astor Hybrid: What’s new?

Apart from its hybrid core, the redesigned MG SUV will get a thorough design overhaul. It is likely to be more aggressive with a redesigned front design that includes a new grille, headlamps, bumper and air intakes. The hybrid SUV is also expected to feature new alloy wheels, revised taillights and a redesigned rear bumper. While the company is yet to reveal the interiors, the car is likely to come with a 360-degree camera setup, wireless charging, keyless entry and start system, electrically adjustable front seats and dual screens (one for infotainment and the other for the instrument panel). The SUV will also feature an updated ADAS suite.

New MG Astor Hybrid: global launch schedule

MG is expected to launch the facelifted Astor in Europe in September 2024. The upcoming SUV, which features updated exterior and mechanical components, is expected to be priced around 25,000 Euros (Rs 2.32 lakh), higher than the current petrol version, which is priced at 17,890 Euros (Rs 16.61 lakh). There is no information about the launch of this SUV in India, but industry rumours suggest that the upgraded model could be launched in India next year.
