Nissan India currently has two products in its product portfolio – Magnite small SUV and the X-Trail three-row SUV. Recently, the automaker launched the Magnite facelift with subtle design changes and feature upgrades. Frank Torres, AMIEO regional unit vice president and Nissan India operations president, revealed that as part of its mid-term plan, the company will launch two mid-size SUVs (one 5-seater and one 7-seater) and a mass-market electric SUV global business strategy. All these new models will be available by the end of 2026.
Frank also confirmed that the upcoming Nissan electric car will be an “affordable” model. The company is also exploring hybrid and compressed natural gas technologies for the Indian market. In order to enhance the brand image and showcase advanced Japanese technology, Nissan will also launch some global models in India through the CBU (complete vehicle) route. The company already offers the Nissan X-Trail as a CBU unit.
Apart from expanding its product portfolio, Nissan also plans to export the Magnite from India to 65 countries, compared to the current 20 markets. The carmaker announced a $600 million (Rs 5,300 crore) investment with Renault to develop six new models (three for each brand). In addition, US$100 million has been invested to expand Magnite’s export business in India. The Japanese automaker aims to increase sales in domestic and export markets to around 100,000 vehicles each by 2026.
Talking about Nissan’s upcoming mid-size SUVs, both models will be based on the new generation Renault Duster and Duster 7-seater models. The latter will be based on the Dacia Bigster SUV concept, which will make its global debut in its production version at the 2024 Paris Motor Show. Nissan’s new Duster and Duster 7-seater versions will come with different design languages and additional features. However, both the new Duster and its Nissan sibling will be based on the same highly localized CMF-B platform and will reportedly come with 1.0L HR10, 1.3L HR13 turbo petrol and 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine options.
