New Subaru Forester sales continue to decline, but BRZ gets a much-needed boost
  • Subaru continued its 27-month sales growth momentum, but sales of four models, including the Forester, fell in October.
  • The Crosstrek tops the list of Subaru’s best-selling models, surpassing the Outback and Forester models.
  • Forester sales fell for the second consecutive month, although year-to-date sales are still up 17.8% from 2023.

Subaru’s U.S. sales rose for the 27th consecutive month in October, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Sales of four models, including the 2025 Forester, are down, a reminder that even for Subaru, the road to growth can have some bumps in the road.

Last month, the Japanese automaker sold 54,552 vehicles nationwide, a slight increase of 1.5% from October 2023’s sales of 53,772 vehicles. This brings Subaru’s year-to-date sales to 548,164 units, up 5.2% from the 520,995 units it moved during the same time period last year. Growth, yes, but it’s a game of inches, not the wave some are hoping for.

The Crosstrek continued its momentum from September and became the brand’s best-selling model, with 15,928 units sold, a significant increase of 15.7% from October 2023’s 13,768 units. Sales of the Outback also climbed 9.3 percent to 13,549 units, enough to overtake the latest-generation Forester for second place.

Last month, Subaru sold 13,431 2025 Foresters. While this is a solid number, it is down 13.2% compared to October 2023. One reason for this decline is that production of new models has not yet reached full capacity. From January to October, Forester sales increased 17.8% to 143,529 units, although this was partly due to the arrival of older-generation models in the first half of the year.

Subaru’s biggest percentage winner is the BRZ, with sales increasing from 291 units in October 2023 to 365 units last month, although that’s barely offset a 26.4% year-to-date decline. The Ascent and WRX were Subaru’s other two models that saw sales growth last month, with sales increases of 0.6% and 15.3% respectively.

Like the Forester, Impreza sales fell 6.1%, Legacy sales fell 23.5% and Solterra sales fell 10.9%.

“Subaru retailers continue to strive to meet the needs of our customers to be more than just a car dealer, providing quality, safe and reliable vehicles that build lifelong relationships,” said Troy Poston, senior vice president of sales for Subaru of America. “With a strong lineup of vehicles and the ability to find the right match for any driver’s needs, we look forward to seeing this success continue into the holiday season.”
