Nissan reportedly cancels U.S.-made small electric SUV
  • Nissan has reportedly decided not to build its subcompact electric crossover in the United States.
  • The model, reportedly codenamed PZ1L, is larger than the Leaf but smaller than the Rogue.
  • The SUV is expected to still be produced in the UK, but may not be sold stateside.

Nissan was one of the original proponents of electric vehicles, launching the Leaf in 2009. Despite its huge lead, the company doesn’t have much to show outside of Ariya.

That’s not to say the automaker isn’t trying, as we’ve seen many projects announced and then delayed or canceled entirely. The most memorable example is the Infiniti LE from more than a decade ago, but the company recently delayed two electric sedans that were scheduled to be built in Canton, Mississippi.

Nissan’s Brian Brockman told Automotive News they want to focus on other electric vehicles that will be built in Mississippi. He went on to say that they would be more suitable for the U.S. market and sell in higher volumes.

While many questions remain, slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles is believed to have contributed to the decision. President Trump’s return to the White House also adds to a lot of uncertainty, as he promises to “end the Green New Deal” and “reverse the electric vehicle mandate.” He is also expected to try to eliminate the $7,500 clean car tax credit, which would make electric vehicles more expensive.
