— A class-action lawsuit stemming from a Nissan Titan XD diesel fuel pump issue is pending in federal court in Tennessee.
The Nissan class action lawsuit was filed by seven diesel truck owners and involves 2016 to 2019 Nissan Titan XD diesel trucks equipped with Cummins 5.0L diesel engines that contain CP4 high-pressure fuel injection pumps.
The lawsuit also involves Cummins Inc., which manufactures 5-liter Cummins diesel engines equipped with the allegedly defective Bosch CP4 fuel pump.
According to the plaintiffs, metal parts inside the CP4 fuel pumps rub against each other, leaving metal shavings that contaminate the fuel system. This damages the engine and costs truck owners more than $10,000 in repairs, the Titan XD Diesel lawsuit claims.
The plaintiffs complained that Nissan did not warn them about the problem with the Titan XD diesel fuel pump.
The CP4 fuel pump problem was allegedly caused by American diesel fuel, which the fuel pumps were not able to handle.
According to the Nissan Titan XD Diesel lawsuit, the fuel pump is designed for European diesels, which provide better lubrication than American diesels.
“The CP4 pump uses the fuel itself for lubrication, and the pump design requires a cam and two pumping cylinders with rollers on each designed to roll together seamlessly without jumping, sliding, sticking or wearing in order to operate efficiently. If the fuel used by the CP4 pump is not lubricious enough (and most US diesels are not), the cam and rollers will wear against each other, creating tiny metal shavings that can be dispersed throughout the high-pressure fuel injection system.” — Nissan Titan XD Diesel Lawsuit

It is claimed that metal shavings from the fuel pump can clog the fuel injectors, causing the engine to stall and become unable to restart.
In addition to paying at least $10,000 to replace the faulty engine, the plaintiffs claimed that the work would take a significant amount of time and would not last because the replacement CP4 fuel pump would fail and damage the engine just as the original one did.
It is claimed that diesel can damage the fuel pump within the first mile of purchasing a truck.
Nissan blamed the fuel pump problem on “fuel contamination,” which was not covered under warranty, the lawsuit said.
“These consumers are entitled to recover the millions of dollars that defendants fraudulently extorted from them, as well as compensation for their actual losses. Plaintiffs and class members are also entitled to reimbursement for repair costs as compensation for overpayments due to irreparable defects in their vehicles at the time of sale.” Nissan Titan XD Diesel Fuel Pump Lawsuit
