When it comes to civic awareness among Indian drivers, one doesn’t expect much. This is because everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere. To do this, they break any law or traffic rule that can help them reach their destination faster. However, in some parts of India, people still follow the rules and have the highest level of civic awareness. Recently, a video showing this was shared online, and it comes from the northeastern region of India.

Civic consciousness in Northeast India
A video shared on Reddit shows people queuing up on the road without honking or stopping. In the short video, a man can be heard explaining the traffic conditions in the Northeast. He shows that all the vehicles in the left lane are stopped in their respective positions.
We can also see that no driver honked. Also, no vehicle tried to overtake by going the wrong way. The photographer then mentioned that this is why people all over the country admire the people of Northeast India. These people are very calm and let the traffic flow smoothly as required.
He added that people from Delhi and other places are destroying these cities by driving recklessly. In the second part of the video, he showed how people stood on the road with vehicles switched off. The entire road could be seen in peace.
Why did the traffic jam last so long this time?
According to a Reddit user, the video is from Shillong, Meghalaya. He explained that there is a dam being built 2-3 km ahead. He added that he was stuck in a similar traffic jam for 3 hours due to the construction of this dam.
The user highlighted that the journey from Shillong to Ghy takes 2.5-3 hours. However, on the day he was stuck in the traffic jam, it took him around 6-7 hours. Another user commented on the same post that traffic jams in Shillong are the worst in terms of duration. He added that it is better for people to walk or ride bicycles instead of driving.
How come people in Northeast China have such civic awareness?
We have discussed this before. However, the explanation behind this behavior of people in the Northeast is this. It is believed that people in this region are very respectful to each other and it is part of their culture.
According to Northeastern people, it is in their nature to take care of others. Therefore, they follow all traffic rules. These people are very careful and do not overtake roughly or change lanes. Another reason is that these people do not want others to get into trouble because of them.
Residents said that even if someone is in a hurry, they will honk the horn twice. Just by listening to the slight sound of the horn, they can tell whether they are driving too slowly or the person honking the horn is in a hurry, and drivers should get out of the way.
So these drivers are allowed to overtake only when there is enough space behind them. After the overtaking is completed, the overtaken drivers honk again. However, this is regarded as a thank you by other drivers.
