In November 2024, Maruti Dzire sedan topped the sales charts, significantly surpassing Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze
Every passenger car segment in India, be it the compact, midsize and subcompact SUV segments, or the hatchback segment, has outsold the sedan segment by a wide margin. While SUVs offer advantages like better road presence, higher ground clearance and more versatility, the hatchback range is more suitable for first-time buyers and those on a budget in India.
On sale since November 2024
Car sales in November 2024 declined both year-on-year and month-on-month. Sales fell to 24,757 units, down 19.27% from 30,665 units in November 2023. The month-on-month sales volume decreased by 11.40% from 27,941 units in October 2024. Despite falling sales, there are still models like the Hyundai Aura and Volkswagen Virtus. Even as sales of all other sedans fall, the Honda Amaze does see some positives outright.
Maruti Dzire was the best-selling sedan in November 2024. Sales volume was 11,779 units. Although sales fell by 26.22% year-on-year and 7.24% month-on-month, it still dominated the market with 47.58% market share. Dzire is also the only sedan to cross the 10,000-unit sales mark. With the launch of the 2024 Maruti Dzire, which brings several first-in-segment features, sales are set to improve in the coming months.
Hyundai Aura performed strongly in November 2024, with sales reaching 4,248 units. This represents a year-on-year increase of 10.34% from the 3,850 units sold in November 2023. However, month-on-month sales fell by 11.59% from 4,805 units in October 2024. Honda Amaze ranked third in the sedan sales list in November 2024 with sales of 2,628 units. sales volume. Despite a slight year-on-year decrease of 0.42%, its month-on-month sales increased by 9.82% from 2,393 units in October 2024. The market share also increased from 8.59% to 10.62% month-on-month. With the launch of the new Amaze, Honda expects Amaze sales to increase.
Volkswagen Virtus sales reached 1,457 units in November 2024, a year-on-year increase of 24.11%. Virtus reached the 50,000 unit sales milestone in October 2024, a feat achieved within 28 months since its launch. Virtus’ 5-star GNCAP safety rating and high-performance engine lineup provide a good foundation.
Hyundai Verna ranks fifth on the list with sales of 1,213 units. Its market share decreased by 28.69% year-on-year and 4.64% month-on-month, with a market share of 4.90%. It was followed by Skoda Slavia with sales of 1,131 units, a significant decrease both year-on-year and month-on-month. Tata Tigor/EV sold 1,131 units last month and Honda City sold 709 units in November 2024. In addition to lower sales, these two models have also seen a significant decline in market share.
Maruti Ciaz sales increase by 114.75%
One sedan on the list that has seen significant year-on-year growth is the Maruti Ciaz. Sales surged to 597 units in November 2024, an increase of 114.75% from 278 units in November 2024, while month-on-month performance fell by 9.41%. Toyota Camry sold 130 units last month, while Skoda Superb sedan sold only 6 units.
