Pagani Huayra Tempesta fails to sell at auction

This ultra-rare supercar with 5,000 miles was offered for multi-million dollar bids but failed to meet its reserve

Pagani Huayra Tempesta fails to sell at auction despite bid of $2,275,000
  • A rare Pagani Huayra Tempesta has just been auctioned online.
  • Despite bids exceeding $2.2 million, the car failed to meet its reserve price.
  • In the meantime, the high bidder can still negotiate with the seller.

There are few cars in the world as coveted and special as the Pagani Huayra. Known for their incredible power and craftsmanship, these cars are often worth millions of dollars when new. What we ordinary people don’t see is the price the rich pay for them. Today we get a glimpse into this world, as a work was put up for auction and failed to sell despite a bid of $2,275,000.

The Huayra in question is one of 100 coupe versions ever produced. It is equipped with a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine from Mercedes-AMG, a seven-speed manual transmission, and about 700 horsepower (521 kilowatts) of power are all transmitted to the rear wheels. For a supercar of its kind, the car has an impressive 5,000 actual miles on the clock.

Best of all, this one comes with the Tempesta bag. What is that, you ask? This is a special set of parts that Pagani installs long after production. According to the Bring a Trailer listing, this 2014 Huayra received the Tempesta package in 2018. It includes titanium exhaust pipes, Öhlins shock absorbers, staggered diameter wheels, a revised front splitter, underbody panels and a rear diffuser made of carbon fiber.

It was all of these special features that prompted bidders to push the best offer to $2,275,000. In fact, time and time again, competitors offered $1,000 or a little more, engaging in a brief but significant (and slightly hilarious) bidding war. Eventually, the bidding ended but the reserve price was not met.

The reality of the auction ending is clear to many participants. While the high bidder doesn’t win the car outright, they now have the opportunity to enter into exclusive negotiations with the seller to see if the two can come to an agreement. The bottom line is that while they may pay more for the car if a deal is struck, the chance to win an effective negotiation doesn’t cost them anything.
