- Don’t expect Peugeot to follow Renault’s recent move to revive older designs.
- Last year’s Inception concept previewed the brand’s future design language.
Peugeot has no interest in following its rivals’ recent love affair with retro design. Instead, the French automaker wants to make its cars look futuristic while still keeping its history in mind.

One of the most eye-catching concept cars launched by Peugeot in recent years is the E-Legend concept car, which was launched in 2018 and its design was inspired by the iconic 504. Despite the positive reception of the concept, it did not influence the design of Peugeot’s road cars, which, according to the company’s head of design Matthias Hossann, does not need to be retro.

“I think sometimes when you have to relaunch a brand, it’s good to do retro designs because it creates a kind of highlight for the brand at some point. I don’t think that’s the case with Peugeot at the moment,” he told Autocar.

The Peugeot Inception concept car launched in 2023 heralds the future design direction of the brand. The concept is a striking four-door sedan based on the Stellantis STLA large electric vehicle platform and features elements that harken back to the brand’s past, including a large windshield that extends much further forward than a regular sedan. It also features styling cues inspired by current Peugeot models, including cat-paw lights at the front.
“For example, what we are showing today with Inception is that Peugeot is actually one of the oldest car brands in the world, but at the same time we are really future-proof and forward-looking,” describes Hossann.
“When we designed Peugeot as a team we said ‘let’s really create the future’, but at the same time we have some solid foundations. We have a great history. So, I’m not saying we never will Looking at our history – E-Legend is a perfect example – but at the same time, how can we transform that into something that’s ultimately really futuristic, you know, I think that’s the main challenge.”
Do you think Peugeot Inception is heading in the right direction? Or should it be more retro like the E-Legend Concept?
