Peugeot’s new SUV is one step closer to Australia, but it will

next generation Peugeot 5008 It has been approved to sell both petrol and electric powertrains in Australia, but it’s unclear whether the French brand will follow suit with the latter.

The new 3008, a smaller version of the 5008, has also been approved for sale, with petrol and electric powertrains.

Peugeot Australia has confirmed the first new-generation 3008 models with mild hybrid power will go on sale this month, with the 5008 due to arrive sometime in 2025.

Government documents show that, like the 3008, the three-row 5008 has been approved for sale with a 100kW turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder mild hybrid system and a 157kW single-motor electric drivetrain. Both are front-wheel drive.

However, the next step in Peugeot’s Australian electric vehicle (EV) rollout remains up in the air, with the presence of electric models in these approval documents no guarantee they will be sold in Australia.

The company had previously said the electric E-3008 would be available, but announced in September that it would phase out plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) while delaying the launch of all electric vehicles until 2025.

“While we cannot comment specifically on individual vehicles, the range of 100 per cent electric vehicles will be extended from 2025,” a Peugeot Australia spokesman said at the time.

According to official sources, the company’s only confirmed electric vehicle is a facelift of the E-Partner van.

Although the company has previously said that it will launch not only electric versions of the E-3008 and E-5008, but also an electric version of the 208 hatchback and an updated version of the E-2008 SUV launched here in 2023.

Peugeot is bringing the electric E-308 hatchback here, but only 14 will be allocated as part of an “exclusive customer evaluation program”. It seems to leave the door open for more examples.

The small hatchback also comes with the same mild-hybrid system as the 3008, 5008 and other Peugeot models.

All members of the 3008 range are equipped with this 100kW/230Nm turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, with prices starting from $52,990 before on-road costs.

Peugeot has not yet confirmed pricing for the 5008, nor how many models it will offer.

By comparison, the 3008 and 5008 are more widely available in petrol, plug-in hybrid and electric versions in Europe.

The entry-level E-3008 comes with a 73kWh battery pack and is claimed to have a range of up to 527km on the WLTP cycle, front or all-wheel, while an optional 98kWh long-range battery enables a class-leading 700km claimed range.

Range drops slightly for the boxy E-5008, ranging from 500 kilometers with the smaller battery and front-wheel drive to 660 kilometers with the larger battery.

Single-motor 73kWh E-3008 and E-5008 models produce 157kW, while dual-motor all-wheel drive models produce 240kW. The 98kWh long-lasting battery is paired with a 170kW motor.

All models can be charged via a DC fast charger at up to 160kW.
