A NSW Police operation targeting illegally modified cars has resulted in the defection of 23 vehicles suspected of being linked to street racing and anti-social driving.
Officers from the Illawarra Traffic and Highway Patrol team joined forces with Transport for NSW compliance inspectors on December 18 and 19 to continue Operation Dissent, following its first public appearance in August.
A total of 36 cars attended the temporary inspection site at Bulli, near Wollongong, and 23 of them were red-tagged and unable to be driven home due to serious grounding defects.

A further 11 yellow stickers were issued for more minor defects, but this only gave the owner enough time to get the vehicle home before it was deemed non-compliant.
According to officials, 75 traffic violation notices have been issued and seven charges are expected to be filed against vehicle owners who fail to attend checkpoints.
Police also blocked the registration of 10 vehicles pending further inspections by Transport for NSW compliance officers.
Opposition actions will continue in 2024 and beyond.
