Two unidentified men in Plainfield, Connecticut, thought they had won the jackpot when they allegedly withdrew $52,000 from a gas station ATM. However, not long after, they lost everything.
Earlier this month, two men entered a gas station in Plainfield, hours after they had been perusing the station in a black BMW SUV. One of the men approached an ATM and is believed to have used a software vulnerability to successfully hack the system and withdraw $52,000.

Police were called to a report of someone tampering with ATMs and checking parked cars. A witness who spoke to Nexstar’s WTNH claimed she spotted a suspect near the store’s ATM. “The guy was standing there for a good 20 to 25 minutes,” the woman said. “He had a little bag in front of him. So, I just thought it was weird that he was there for so long.”
The men quickly fled with the loot, and authorities began chasing them. Perhaps fearing what would happen if they were caught, the men threw several items out of the BMW. These included a backpack, in which police found $52,000 worth of $20 bills, a mobile hotspot device and an iPhone.
According to Fox 2 Now , the chase was forced to stop due to the BMW’s excessive speed.
This type of ATM theft, known as “jackpot theft,” is a growing problem across the United States, according to Connecticut State Police Sgt. Luke Davis.
“This is much more advanced than your average ATM robbery,” Davis said. “Now, this software can be used to bypass the ATM security system, basically the ‘jackpot.'”
