Porsche 911 GT3 RS facelift debuts

When the 992.2 RS makes its debut (likely in 2026), expect more downforce and more horsepower.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS facelift debuts
  • The Porsche 992.2 GT3 RS makes its debut as a facelifted model.
  • The revamped track weapon will continue to use a naturally aspirated flat-six engine, but its power will be increased from the 518 horsepower of the 2024 car.
  • The production car will feature bumpers and aerodynamic upgrades not seen on the early prototypes.

When Porsche unveiled the facelifted 992.2 911 earlier this year, it introduced just two new models: the GTS Hybrid and the base Carrera. That means there will be more models to come in the coming years, including the GT3 RS, which our spy photographers caught out in the open for the first time.

We can tell this is an RS by the jagged front fender vents, hood vents, unique door design, and towering rear wing. But this is an early prototype, and it still uses the current model’s front bumper, which we’re sure will be swapped out for something newer and more downforce-intensive by the time it debuts.

Like the new 911 GTS and Carrera, the RS will also feature illuminated rear “Porsche” lettering, though this car hides it under camouflage panels that also prevent us from seeing the new lower bumper design. Inside, carbon fiber bucket seats and fabric door pulls will be the norm, along with a fully digital instrument cluster, a feature that debuts on the new Carrera and GTS.

The big question is whether the GT3 and RS will also borrow the GT3’s hybrid tech to help deliver more power without resorting to turbocharging and losing one of the car’s main USPs. The current GT3 RS produces 518 hp (525 PS) from its naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six, while the turbocharged GTS Hybrid gets 54 hp (55 PS) of its 536 hp (541 PS) from its electric motor.

One of the RS models that will receive turbocharged power is the GT2 RS, which was last shown in 2019. The replacement for the 690-horsepower (700 PS) flagship will reportedly feature hybrid assistance, pushing power into the deep 700-hp territory.

Many fans were disappointed that Porsche couldn’t offer a manual transmission for the GTS due to the complexity of the hybrid system, but this wasn’t a problem for the RS, which hasn’t had a manual transmission for more than a decade.

If Porsche’s previous timeline is anything to go by, don’t expect to see a final production car until 2026. The 2025-MY GT3 RS is simply a continuation of the 2024 model, and Porsche will have to replace the now-defunct regular GT3 before we see a 992.2-spec replacement. That could result in the new RS coming to the U.S. as a 2027 model.
