In fact, it actually achieved a 1.88-second one-way 0 to 60 mph run

  • Car and Driver has just confirmed that the Taycan Turbo GT can hit 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds.
  • The test scenario included running in both directions on unprepared surfaces.
  • Rival cars like the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire perform better at higher speeds.

Porsche just beat Tesla at its own game. A few years ago, the US electric carmaker claimed 0-60 mph in under two seconds, but that came with a few asterisks. Now, the new Porsche Taycan takes the crown as the fastest production car tested from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h). car and driver. Here’s a look at the test protocol, the cars it surpassed and how it might achieve a faster time.

The new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT will never be considered slow. With launch control engaged, output soars from 777 hp to 1,019 hp (760 kW / 1,033 hp), briefly peaking at 1,092 hp (815 kW / 1,108 hp) within two seconds. The manufacturer claims a top speed of 180 mph (289 km/h) and a 0-60 mph time of 2.2 seconds, or 2.1 seconds with the optional Weissach package.

That said, cars like the Lucid Air Sapphire and Tesla Model S Plaid all operate in the same sandbox. However, neither of them could do what this Porsche just did.

More: What is the greatest Porsche of all time?

according to car and driverthe Taycan Turbo GT accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.910 seconds. They then turned the car around and did it again, this time in 1.898 seconds. Keep in mind that these numbers include one-foot rollout time, which is a performance-testing standard that the magazine estimates shaves about 0.1 seconds off most cars’ times.

This means that even regardless of launch time, the Taycan Turbo GT can still hit 0-60 in under two seconds. Forget the Ferrari SF90, Tesla Model S Plaid, Lucid Air Sapphire or any other production car – this is the fastest 0-60 time on record.

Beyond that, there are some other factors to consider. First, this is on a standard concrete surface. Many cars seeking such a title require the car to be put on a sticky drag strip in order to hit the claimed numbers. Additionally, the Taycan tested was not the lightest in the range. Porsche offers a so-called Weissach package for the same car, which it says can save 165 pounds (about 75 kilograms). Imagine what this car would do when it pulled a person’s weight on a drag strip.

Tesla and Lucid are faster at higher speeds

That said, it’s not all a victory for Porsche. CD pointed out that as the speed climbed, both Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire began to catch up. While the Taycan does the quarter mile in 9.3 seconds at 150 mph (241 km/h), it matches the 1,234-hp Lucid Air and beats the 1,020-hp Lucid Air by just a tenth of a second. Model S Plaid, but the story changes at that point.

Both rivals have higher exit speeds at the end of the quarter mile, with the Plaid 0.2 seconds faster and the Sapphire 0.7 seconds ahead when the cars hit 160 mph (257 km/h). At 170 mph (274 km/h), the Sapphire beats the Porsche by a full 1.1 seconds.
