- The owner of a Tesla Cybertruck said it was damaged by potholes and required $34,000 in repairs.
- Fortunately, his insurance company paid for the extensive repairs, which sidelined the electric car for nearly four months.
- Despite the hefty bill, the owner claims he was “surprised by the sturdiness and capabilities of this truck.”
Tesla’s much-anticipated Mad Max and Lego Cybertruck has been on the market for a year, and as expected, drama has come with it. One owner claims their electric pickup truck was damaged simply by a pothole in the road, resulting in an eye-popping repair bill of more than $34,000. Yes, thirty-four grand. But he still thinks electric cars are solid and capable.

In a Facebook post retweeted on Reddit, the unnamed Cybertruck enthusiast revealed pictures of the damage as well as screenshots of the total repair cost, which was $34,013 including tax.

“After nearly four months, I finally got my truck back,” he wrote. “It was very difficult to repair and a lot more needed to be replaced than originally anticipated.”

Of course, that’s more than you’d expect from the hard pothole hits typical of a full-size truck, which is typically one of the most resilient vehicles on the road. How big is this hole? I’m imagining something that might be the same size as the sinkhole that opened at the Corvette Museum in 2014?
“The rear suspension bracket broke and went through the frame, requiring the entire rear frame to be replaced,” he explains. “To name a few, they include front and rear rack and pinion steering, suspension, front and rear bumpers, air suspension systems and bed components.”
Some Reddit commenters have openly questioned whether potholes can actually cause that much damage to a truck, whether it’s a traditional body-on-frame pickup or one made from aluminum castings like a Tesla.
One commenter claimed (without providing evidence) that the owner posted in August that the damage occurred when he jumped the truck 22 feet (6.7 m), and the owner’s slightly cryptic comments in the latest post only fanned the flames.

“Since the insurance company paid the bill, I won’t comment on how it was driven, just a very large pothole in our washed-out road that caused all the dominoes to fall,” he said.
Despite suffering such extensive damage, and requiring an equally large amount of work and money to get it back in working order, the owner didn’t underestimate his Tesla.
“This is not a comment on the durability of the truck,” he said. “You will be surprised at the sturdiness and capabilities of this truck. This is still the most amazing truck I have ever owned!”

One pothole and $32,000 in repairs later, he still loves the truck!
