- This is one of three pre-production prototypes from Ford.
- Now, it will go to auction on August 24.
The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a world-renowned hot hatchback that’s loved by car enthusiasts. Jeremy Clarkson is a household name in the automotive industry. The two of them have had a momentous time together, and now you can join in on the journey.
Ford’s Escort RS Cosworth was a homologation special that punched well above its weight. It had a top speed of 150 mph (240 km/h) and was the first production car to generate so much downforce at high speeds. It also sent two-thirds of its power to the rear wheels.

It’s no wonder Jeremy Clarkson calls it one of his favorite cars. Of course, that could be partly due to the well-made car he drives. According to the auction listing, this is one of three pre-production prototypes that Ford hand-built. The automaker loaned the car to Clarkson for the purpose of letting him test drive it.
When he first drove the car, it became a Top Gear magazine prize. Then, in 2000, Clarkson drove the car again, driving it across Buttertubs Pass in North Yorkshire in The Clarkson Car Years.
As a homologation special, the Escort RS Cosworth is pretty rare, with only 2,500 produced. Add to that the rarity of a pre-production model, and it’s easy to see why the price might be above average. Of course, the celebrity factor doesn’t hurt its value either. It’ll be sold on August 24 at Iconic Auctioneers with an estimated price of £65,000 – 75,000 or about $81,250 – $93,750. Considering his history with the car, we wouldn’t be shocked if Jezza bought it himself.
