Proud of fostering DEI

Editor’s Note: Originally published in the June 2024 issue of Trade Show Executive magazine.

Pride Month reminds us of the importance of creating inclusive spaces within our organizations, where every team member feels valued and recognized. As we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community this month, we have the opportunity to reflect on how we can create a company culture that truly values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Diversity goes beyond the differences we see; it encompasses the myriad perspectives, experiences, and identities that make each of us unique. As executives, it is our responsibility to recognize, embrace, and build successful collaboration among team members despite these differences. By fostering a culture that not only recognizes but actively celebrates our differences, we empower our teams to bring their authentic selves to work and contribute to our shared success together.

To build an inclusive corporate culture, executives must first understand the importance of leading by example. Our behaviors, actions, and policies should communicate our commitment to DEI. This includes implementing inclusive hiring practices, such as diversifying the talent pool and addressing unconscious bias. By hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds, we provide our teams with a variety of perspectives and experiences that drive innovation and creativity.

Additionally, executives must prioritize ongoing education and training to effectively address diversity-related challenges. By fostering an environment for learning and continuous growth, we can better understand the unique issues facing the LGBTQ+ community and the diverse perspectives of our workforce.

Review existing policies to ensure they take the LGBTQ+ community into account, such as gender-neutral bathrooms and adequate health benefits. Incorporate anti-discrimination policies so that employees can effectively report discrimination or harassment and ensure these issues are addressed promptly.

Encourage team members to participate in LGBTQ+ allyship programs and provide opportunities for diversity and inclusion training. An environment that fosters understanding builds bridges between team members. Team building is known to strengthen connections between colleagues, which in turn strengthens the team, which in turn strengthens the organization—a win-win for everyone!

In my organization, our Global Pride Council and business leaders promote and support trans and non-binary inclusion through internal and external education and advocacy programs, and ensure our events are safe and welcoming spaces for all LGBTQIA+ guests. We will once again actively participate in the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index assessment to ensure that RX and RELX are LGBTQIA+ inclusive workplaces. We achieved an exceptional 100% score in the 2023 assessment and were recognized by the HRC at a ceremony in New York in December 2023.

We will continue to expand our partnership with myGwork by featuring our amazing LGBTQIA+ colleagues across its extensive network, including publishing in Diva and manner magazine and myGwork social events. Finally, we will be expanding our Pride ERG network and will be marching in the London Pride Parade again on June 29th with our RELX colleagues!

Creating a company culture that values DEI is more than just checking off a checklist. It requires a true commitment to change, a willingness to challenge our biases, and an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.

Is it worth it? Of course it is!

We hear more and more reports that diverse and inclusive workplaces outperform less forward-thinking ones in terms of creativity, innovation, and overall business performance. By embracing diversity, we can unlock the potential for new perspectives, breakthrough ideas, and ultimately, competitive advantage.

Executive leaders have the power to shape our organizations by championing inclusion and equality in every aspect of our operations. This Pride Month, let’s reaffirm our commitment to creating inclusive spaces and cultures where everyone feels valued, respected, and celebrated. By embracing the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, we can build stronger teams and make a positive impact that reverberates throughout our organizations and industries.

Join us as we champion Pride not only this month, but all year long, and work to build inclusive organizations that truly reflect the richness of humanity.
