Renault Duster to make comeback in new generation incarnation in 2026
Renault India is gearing up to refresh its product portfolio with major updates to existing models and a major launch of its popular SUV Duster. The company recently announced facelift plans for the Kiger and Triber, which will be launched in the market later this year. Meanwhile, the new Renault Duster is slated to be launched in India in 2026, marking the return of the iconic model after four years.
Kiger and Triber plastic surgery
The Kiger SUV and Triber MPV, two key models in Renault India’s product line-up, will receive a major update in the mid-term. The refreshed design is expected to be in line with Renault’s global styling cues, moving away from the Kwid-inspired design language of the current Kiger. Inside, both models will feature an updated dashboard with lighter tones and soft-touch materials for a more premium feel.
While the updates are mainly cosmetic, the Kiger will continue to be offered with its current engine options: a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol. Likewise, the Triber will retain its 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
Renault also hinted at the launch of a new global badge, which is yet to debut on any of its Indian models.
Sales and Marketing Background
Launched in 2019 and 2021 respectively, Triber and Kiger are designed specifically for the Indian market, offering competitive pricing and features in the sub-four meter segment. Despite occasional updates and special editions, both models have struggled to maintain strong sales. In 2024, Kiger will produce an average of less than 1,000 units per month, while Triber will perform slightly better at about 1,500 units.
Apart from domestic sales, Renault also exports the Kwid, Triber and Kiger to 14 countries, contributing to its overall market share.
The Duster will return in 2026
The much-anticipated third-generation Duster will hit Indian showrooms in 2026. Production is scheduled to begin in September 2025, with pricing expected to be announced early next year. The new Duster will form part of Renault’s strategy to reinvigorate its SUV portfolio in India, with the first-generation model sold from 2012 to 2022. The second generation Duster skipped the Indian market.
Renault also confirmed plans to launch a three-row SUV Bigster to follow the Duster. Both the models will have a unique identity as Nissan derivatives and all four SUVs will be produced at the Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai. These vehicles will cater to the needs of both domestic and export markets.
strategic initiatives
The refresh of the Kiger and Triber, along with the relaunch of the Duster, signify Renault’s efforts to regain momentum in the highly competitive Indian car market. By refreshing its product line-up and focusing on exporting vehicles to global markets, Renault aims to strengthen its position and expand its footprint in the coming years.
