Renault Triber gets low safety rating in Global NCAP

“The India-made Triber provides good protection to the driver and passenger’s head and neck in frontal and side impacts, but poor protection to the driver’s chest. Structural performance is unstable. Side impact protection is good to the head, abdomen and pelvis,” said Global NCAP. The India-made Renault family car performed better than Maruti’s Ertiga in crash tests conducted in Africa.

The Triber does not have the additional airbag option that is common in the Ertiga. The Renault MPV does not even have the ESC safety option. Despite all these limitations, this car performs better than the Ertiga.

The security levels are as follows

Adult Protection: 22.29 out of 34 stars

Child Protection: 19.99 out of 49 stars

For the 18-month-old child dummy, the child seat is installed facing rearwards, providing full protection for the child’s head. However, for the 3-year-old child dummy, the forward-facing child seat is installed using ISOFIX anchorages. However, protection for the child’s neck and chest is rated as poor; the anchorage does not prevent head exposure in a frontal impact.

Testing the vehicle’s safety features

Safety features of the Renault Triber in South Africa include

  • 2 airbags
  • ABS with EBD
  • Rear parking camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Seat belt reminder for driver and front passenger

What features does it lack compared to the India-spec Renault Triber?

  • Optional side airbags
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Hill start assist available on the Indian-spec Triber
  • Rear seat belt reminder

Unlike the test of Ertiga, the Triber was not subjected to side pole impact test.

What to speculate?

Such safety ratings are not in line with the expectations of a family car. These cars are expected to be used on many occasions for long trips and family vacations. It is a shame to own a car that does not meet the safety standards. It also undermines the confidence of the buyers in the car.

We do think that companies will start working on improving safety standards in Indian cars. Renault is also working on improving safety. Their Kiger is a better equipped car in terms of safety.

Let’s look forward to some safer cars!
