past I have personally owned a BMW X3 for about 10 years and currently own a 2018 X5 M Sport. Additionally, I’ve driven the brilliant X5M, X1 and the ridiculously fast MX on the street and track. However, until now I haven’t had time to drive the more crossover-focused X-Class BMW vehicles.
About 4 weeks ago, BMW loaned me an X6 to drive for a week to get a feel for what the other X-Class vehicles were like. During the week, I took it with me to run errands and also drove to Maine to visit the Maine Classic Car Museum, where I served as their collection consultant.
BMW calls the X6 a midsize coupe SUV. Although the name seems strange at first glance, it is an SUV and actually has 4 doors, but it does look more like a coupe in terms of driving dynamics and appearance.
The car I borrowed was an Aventurin Red Metallic 2024 model with M Sport trim, which had almost all the options of the X6. Some of the options include Driving Assistance Professional, M Sport Professional, Executive Package, Climate Comfort Package and Climate and Parking Assist Professional Package. This brings the $73,900 price tag to $87,545. It may seem a bit pricey, but I just built a 2024 Cadillac XT5 online, and it costs only $8,000 less than this BMW, but has half the quality of an X6 and far less performance and comfort.
Despite my reservations about the whole idea of a coupe-SUV, I have to say that after a week with this X6, it does exactly what it’s described to be. The X6 drives like a high-performance luxury coupe, just with more storage space and off-road capability. The car drives very well on the interstate, capable of cruising several miles quickly without any effort. Being stuck in traffic multiple times made me fall in love with driver assistance, which combines lane assist and adaptive cruise control to make the stress of stop-and-go traffic disappear.
On the more challenging twisty roads, the X6 is nearly flawless, handling like a true sports car and capable of exiting corners at truly stunning speeds. It’s powered by BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine, which puts out 335 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 330 pound-feet at 1500 rpm. That equates to my personal 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds and 1/4 mile time of 13.4 seconds. If you think this is just “okay” performance, consider this: This is more performance than Porsche’s 996 or 997-era 911. As for driving feel, the X6 is an engaging sports sedan that happens to be packaged as an SUV.
It’s a different experience than the X5 because the X6 is lower, giving it a much smaller feel. It makes me want to tackle these roads with more speed and vigor than the X5.
Front seat comfort is excellent and ergonomics have been well attended to, although I still wish the climate controls were not on the nice 12.4-inch wide TFT display but on buttons. This is how I feel about every new car. Maybe I’m just old, but I find myself constantly messing with the climate control, and having to dig into the I-Drive interface to get to some of its functions is a bit annoying. That said, the overall look and feel of the materials, especially the silverwood interior, make the X6 feel like a very special car.
What surprised me was how comfortable the back seat was. Looking at the car from the side, you might think that the slope of the roof would give the X6 less headroom. Well, I’m 6’4″ and I can attest to the fact that I can sit in the back seat of an X6 Fine, even with someone as tall as me behind the wheel.
It could be said to be contemptuous before the investigation, but I didn’t expect to like the X6 at all. In fact, I’ve often wondered what the point of a BMW coupe/SUV was, and have said it many times. After driving this car for 1,000 miles, I now understand. I was also obsessed with this look and by the end of the week I really loved the look of it. The X6 is the perfect choice when you need the extra carrying capacity and off-road capabilities of an SUV, but want something a little sportier than a traditional SUV. This car answers these questions perfectly.
