Forget about the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. This BMW is a better car for a third of the price.
While visiting Los Angeles earlier this year, I had the opportunity to drive the 2025 BMW M4 Competition and see what kind of car it is. I have to say, it’s certainly a track-ready vehicle that can also do double duty as a daily driver. If you think of it as a more civilized rival to the GT3 RS version of the 911, you’re on the right track.
My loaner car came with almost every available option, including the Driving Assistance Professional Package, Parking Assistance Package, Carbon Fiber Package, and Executive Package. Its as-tested price of $108,945 includes the special-order Chalk BMW individual paint color and a wild Yas Marina blue and black leather interior with yellow highlights, all of which perfectly match the exterior paint color.
Even with the carbon fiber sport seats installed, the interior of the M4 is comfortable enough that I could move my wife and my sister and brother-in-law around in the car. Everyone felt comfortable on our many tours on Los Angeles’ roads and highways, which are so poorly maintained that they often resemble war zones. Try it out in a GT3 RS sometime and tell me which car is better.
The car attracted a lot of positive attention wherever I went, including when I pulled into a gas station and two other BMW M owners followed me up asking me questions about the car. They came away impressed with the 2025 M4 Comp, especially after I told them how good it was.
Speaking of performance, according to some testing (which I totally believe), the 2025 M4 Competition is capable of a blistering 2.7-second 0-60 time, a quarter-mile time of 10.7 seconds, and a top speed of 188 mph. Since those numbers are equal to or better than the GT3 RS, I’d say they’re more than capable — especially when you consider the M4 can comfortably seat four people and carry their luggage.
The driving experience is simply fantastic, with a real sense of driver involvement. This car, much like the previous generation M5 Comparison, seems to connect perfectly in corners. It does this at the very limit, and the speed you can go through corners is simply incredible. That, coupled with the S58’s engine’s stunning sound in Sport mode, makes it something any performance-focused buyer will want in their garage. When you look at the luxurious materials used in the interior, you’ll find that this machine feels like a German-made Aston Martin Vantage, better designed and faster in every way. On a track, the M4 Comp will be stunning and I’m sure you’ll embarrass owners of supercars that cost 3-4 times as much – it’s an unquantifiable amount of fun.
Now for styling. The grille is large, but unlike the one on the regular 4 Series coupe, it looks perfect as it really balances out the aggressive look of the M-specific front end and adds a bit of menace. The M4 Competition is designed to stand out from the crowd, and it does it very well.
So, what are my takeaways from a week of racing the 2025 M4? Well, the suspension is uncompromising and can be a bit tiring on poorly maintained roads. As a daily driver, it’s still livable, but just barely. I personally don’t like the large single screen of the dashboard and really miss the separate instrument cluster that the M4 once had. Having said that, the connectivity and information provided by the new dashboard is much improved compared to the old dual-display version. However, I like that BMW still uses their standard shifter on this car for the automatic transmission, as I hate the shifters you see on other BMWs (sports cars – whether they are automatic or manual – all require shifting device). The performance of the M4 Comp is simply amazing. It’s quick and fast in the best way possible, but it delivers true supercar performance. It’s probably the best ultra-high-performance daily driver on the planet.
The M4 Comp has another advantage over its competitors from Stuttgart. The 2025 Porsche 911 GT3 RS offers less performance, less comfort, less usable interior space and less practicality. The Porsche’s cabin materials and overall build quality are no better than the M4 Comp’s. Furthermore, in my opinion, the Porsche is not that comfortable or fun to drive on a daily basis. Before you go on about the magical way Porsche steering feels better (which is nonsense at best and propaganda at worst), get out and actually drive an M4 Comp. It has excellent steering feel and is a true driver’s car in every sense of the word. The fact that the M4 Comp costs $108,000, while a Porsche with equivalent options and equipment costs more than $300,000, makes the BMW look like the best-performing budget car available today.
If I were to buy a car like this, I wouldn’t even consider a Porsche GT3 RS or any car from Italy. I would go straight to my BMW dealer and buy one of these amazing cars, probably personalized in Sonic Speed Blue Metallic and with the same interior color you see here. I would use the remaining $200,000 to buy a nice, brand new, fully loaded SUV for the winter, but still end up with £100 in the bank.
