Despite the surge in interest, trademark applications can be traced back to 2018

- Rivian’s fans were in a coma after Reddit users discovered R2T Moniker’s trademark application.
- This is not a new thing, as the company initially filed an application for the name in 2018.
- Automakers can often use trademarks, even if they may never be used.
More than a year ago, Rivian launched the R2 and plans to arrive in the first half of 2026 at a base price of $45,000. Fast forward to today, and it’s exciting as Rivian has filed a trademark application for the nickname.
Unfortunately, you shouldn’t be full of hope because this is not a new development. Instead, Rivian initially filed an application for the R2T trademark in October 2018. However, it was abandoned on June 20, 2022.

Shortly before this, Rivian filed another application for the R2T trademark. This seems to be more detailed as it works with “land vehicles” as well as dazzling parts and components. These range from sun visors and mud flaps to car bodywork, electric motors and vehicle badges.

The latest app is active, but that doesn’t mean fans should be overly excited about it. Automobile manufacturers often provide their vehicles with trademark names, especially vehicles with similar names to those already used. In particular, BMW once offered trademarks for the X8 nickname, but was cancelled early last year.
This is not to say there will be no R2T in the future, but the Rivian is currently full of plates. In addition to R2, the company has announced plans for R3 and R3X. The models are planned to be built at a new manufacturing plant near the Georgia social circle, with production likely to begin as early as 2028.
