European premium electric compact SUV
Perfectly sized for city driving or long road trips, the 2024 Audi Q4 55 E-tron Quattro stands out from all other premium electric compact SUVs.
It was all-new for 2022 but received an upgrade for 2024 that included more power and range, more refined steering and suspension, and faster charging.
reach there
Straight-line performance enables the 4,850-pound Q4 E-tron to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. Dual electric motors (front and rear) produce 335 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque, thanks to Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system, for even, smooth acceleration, with instant torque available at any speed through a single-speed transmission. Press the right pedal, and linear acceleration is unaffected by shifting gears, because there are no gears. The Q4 E-tron features Audi drive select, with five driver-selectable driving modes—efficiency, comfort, auto, dynamic, and individual—each of which adjusts steering feel to provide a different driving experience.
this US Environmental Protection Agency The 2024 Audi Q4 55 E-tron Quattro has an electric range of 258 miles. That’s roughly how far we’ve gotten in Southern California, with an efficiency of 3.1 miles per kilowatt-hour, helped in part by the car’s 0.28 drag coefficient.
The Q4 E-tron is composed on the highway and in city driving, and the progressive, speed-dependent power-assisted steering makes driving easy. The steering is weighted just enough to provide good road feedback, but not so heavy that you have to push hard to turn into corners.
255/40 Bridgestone Alenza all-season tires mounted on 21-inch 5-Y-spoke design wheels provide good grip and a quiet highway ride. When equipped with a trailer hitch (a $650 option), it’s rated to tow 2,650 pounds.
“It’s not meant to be a sports car by any means, its raison d’être is primarily ‘approachable, premium electrification to make the car appealing to everyday drivers,'” Audi product communications manager Nathan Hoyt told us.
TOLL
The 82-kWh battery can be charged in three ways. Most owners will install a 240-volt Level 2 charger, which takes 7.5 to 9 hours to fully charge using an 11.0-kW onboard charger. Using a DC fast charger (175 kW), the 10 to 80 percent charge time drops to 28 minutes. Original owners can get up to 250 kWh of free fast charging for two years by using the following methods: Electrify AmericaIn an emergency, it will take about 80 hours to charge to 100% from a regular 120-volt household outlet.
It is worth noting that cold weather can affect charging time and range. To address this issue, Audi has equipped the Q4 E-tron with a heat pump that pre- and post-regulates battery temperature to maximize charging efficiency.
Regenerative charging
Regenerative charging is the conversion of kinetic energy into electrical energy while braking or coasting. The motor deceleration process is controlled by paddles on the steering wheel. The Q4 E-tron does not have full one-pedal driving, where the SUV can come to a complete stop without the need to apply the brakes. It does decelerate slowly, at which point the Auto Hold feature will keep the Q4 E-tron stationary without the need to apply the brakes.
Exquisite cabin
Audi’s interior space is impressive, refined, and full of attention to detail. The exterior is typically German, neither ostentatious nor trendy. Our interior was Parchment Beige with Steel Gray stitching; the dashboard and carpets were black, and the headliner was gray, matching the seat stitching. The look was unified and complementary using soft materials, natural wood inlays, brushed aluminum, and gloss black trim.
Audi didn’t eliminate all buttons and other switchgear, but most controls are either on the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel or operated by touching the 11.6-inch Multi Media Interface (MMI) touchscreen. There’s a short learning curve when switching between maps, music playlists, and vehicle settings. The 10.5-inch digital instrument cluster features traditional large round gauges with white numbers on a black background. Toggling options takes you to various screens showing the charge status, a speedometer with an efficiency meter, and other useful information. The menus are easy to learn, and there’s no need to navigate through multiple screens to find what you’re looking for.
The lower screen is used to display the three-zone automatic climate system. The fourth screen is a configurable augmented reality head-up display that projects various information on the windshield above the steering wheel.
Our Q4 E-tron came with a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and a Sonos premium audio system with FM/SiriusXM radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. There’s no AM radio, but there are wireless phone charging and USB-C ports front and rear, as well as 12V outlets for rear-seat passengers.
The front seats are soft, supportive and have power adjustment everywhere, including the driver and passenger lumbar area. The rear seats offer plenty of leg, head and shoulder room for two adults, or three for shorter trips. The beauty of an electric car is the flat floor that provides plenty of legroom for rear passengers.
The panoramic sunroof has a power sunshade, and the power liftgate’s kick function works better than most we’ve tried recently. Cargo space increases from 24.8 cubic feet with the rear seats upright to 40:20:40 and 53.1 cubic feet with them folded. Interior storage is in the doors, under the cargo area floor, and in the floating console. Too bad there’s no front trunk.
Design options
There are two models – the Q4 E-tron and Q4 Sportback E-tron, with the latter featuring a more aerodynamic fastback roofline and the former sporting more traditional SUV styling.
