  • Australian police are investigating the cause of an accident in which a Tesla Model S fell from a garage.
  • The out-of-control electric car caused serious damage to a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and a Corolla.
  • Despite the severity of the accident, both passengers escaped with only minor injuries.

Dashcam footage from a multi-storey car park in New South Wales, Australia, captured the shocking moment a Tesla Model S lost control, plowing into multiple vehicles before careening through a barrier and plunging to the water level below. . If you’re expecting the common “driver error” explanation, you might want to think again. This remains a mystery.

The accident occurred last Saturday at a DFO shopping mall in New South Wales, Australia. A video shows the Model S initially hitting the front of a Toyota LandCruiser Prado, briefly lifting it into the air and spinning it. The Tesla then continued speeding through the parking lot and the dashcam struck the car. Just two seconds later, it can be heard hitting the guardrail and falling to the pavement.

An official cause of the crash has not yet been given, but NSW Police are investigating. The wrecked Model S was also sent to the garage for electronic equipment inspection to determine the cause of the accident. It is unclear whether the 59-year-old male driver had full control of the car at the time or whether he suffered some kind of mechanical and software-related failure.

Several crashes involving Teslas in the U.S. have been blamed on the automaker’s Autopilot driver-assistance system, but it would be highly unusual for a driver to attempt to engage the system in a parking lot. Nonetheless, the cause of the incident is still under investigation and it is important to determine whether the incident was vehicle or driver related to prevent similar situations from happening in the future.
