The Royal Enfield Bear 650 has just been launched, a scrambler variant of the popular Interceptor 650, bringing a new twist to Royal Enfield’s existing 650cc range. This Scrambler-inspired model is designed to satisfy riders looking for an adventure-oriented aesthetic combined with on- and off-road functionality.
Key engine and performance specifications
The Bear 650 continues to use the familiar 648cc air-oil-cooled parallel-twin engine that is the hallmark of the Royal Enfield 650 series. With this configuration, the engine produces around 47 hp, while torque output increases slightly from 52 Nm in the Interceptor to 56.5 Nm at 5,150 rpm, thanks to a new two-into-one exhaust system. This change not only differentiates the Bear’s design, but also enhances its off-road potential by keeping the exhaust pipes elevated and slightly reducing overall weight.
Suspension and wheel upgrades for improved off-road capabilities
The Bear 650 stands out with its specialized suspension setup. The front end now features a Showa inverted (USD) fork, similar to the one on the Shotgun but with custom internals that offer 130mm of travel compared to the Interceptor’s 110mm. The dual shock absorbers at the rear have been redesigned to provide 115 mm of travel, ensuring better stability on rough terrain. The 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels are equipped with MRF Nylorex block tires to enhance grip and handling on mixed surfaces.
Design elements with a scrambler twist
Royal Enfield has changed the ergonomics of the Bear to suit street and light off-road conditions. The handlebars are wider than those on the Interceptor, allowing for a more controlled upright position, while the footpegs have been repositioned for improved rider comfort. The seat height is now 830 mm (the highest among Royal Enfield 650 models), adding to the Scrambler’s raised stance, complemented by a ground clearance of 184 mm.
Safety and brake adjustments
In terms of braking, the Bear 650 retains the 320mm front disc similar to the Interceptor, but the rear disc has been enlarged to 270mm to improve braking power. Dual-channel ABS is standard, and the rear ABS can be deactivated for off-road use, providing greater control on a variety of terrains. These features reflect Bear’s off-road-oriented upgrades designed to provide reliability and safety in unpredictable conditions.
The collision of modern style and classic elements
Stylistically, the Bear 650 blends a rugged scrambler vibe with refined details. The bike’s LED lighting system, including headlights, taillights and new LED indicators, modernizes its aesthetics while maintaining the brand’s retro appeal. The Bear’s bodywork is simple, with race-style number plates on the side panels, adding to its rugged scrambler identity. Available in five colors, the Bear 650 also features a circular TFT display with navigation.
Pricing and market positioning
Royal Enfield has set the price range of the Bear 650 between INR 3,35,000 and INR 3,40,000, with deliveries expected in November 2024. This makes it competitive in the adventure touring and scrambler segments, a category where India is seeing growing interest.
