Both the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450 are based on the same Sherpa 450 platform and are powered by a 452cc engine that produces around 40 bhp of power and 40 Nm of torque
Ever since Royal Enfield launched the Guerrilla 450 in India, it has been a hit in the motorcycle world. Royal Enfield, once known for its retro motorcycles that were good-looking but technologically outdated, has turned things around and developed the Sherpa 450 platform.
The first model based on this platform was the Himalayan 450, while the Guerrilla 450 was launched recently. The Guerrilla 450 was so popular that it outsold the Himalayan 450 in just a few months since its initial launch. Let’s take a look at more detailed statistics of this development.
Guerrilla 450 sales surpass Himalayan 450
There are many reasons why the Guerrilla 450 might outsell the Himalayan 450. Before we delve deeper, we need to understand the sales and statistics of these motorcycles. In July 2024, Royal Enfield sold a total of 60,755 units. Of these, the Himalayan 450 sold 2,769 units and the Guerrilla 450 sold 1,469 units.
In July 2024, the Himalayan 450 still leads by 1,300 units. However, this does not tell the whole story. Things get interesting when we bring the sales analysis data into the mix. In July 2024, Himalayan sales fell by 12.68% year-on-year, compared to 3,171 units sold in July 2023. That’s a year-on-year sales decline of 402 units.
Not only that, the month-on-month decline is also 9.57%, with over 3,062 units sold in June 2024, a decrease of 293 units. On the other hand, the Guerrilla 450 is taking off in terms of sales. If we look at the sales in August 2024, the Himalayan 450 sold 2,009 units, while the Guerrilla 450 climbed with 2,205 units sold.
However, the more interesting data comes from the analysis of Himalayan sales in August 2024. Year-on-year, the popular ADV’s sales have almost halved, down 47.90% year-on-year, with 1,847 fewer units sold, compared to the 3,856 units sold in August 2023. Even month-on-month, Himalayan 450 sales have fallen by 27.45%, with 760 fewer units sold.
On the other hand, the Guerrilla 450 recorded a month-on-month growth of 50.10% with an increase in sales of 736 units. This could indicate that Indian motorcycle enthusiasts prefer the Guerrilla 450 over the Himalayan 450.
But why?
There are many reasons why motorcycle enthusiasts would consider the Guerrilla 450 over the Himalayan 450. The main reason could be the price as the Guerrilla 450 is Rs 46,000 cheaper (ex-showroom) than the Himalayan 450. Styling and positioning could also be a factor. As a roadster, the Guerrilla 450 is an everyday vehicle, while the Himalayan is too focused on touring and off-roading.
Sticking with the everyday machine theory, the Guerrilla 450 is 11 kg lighter than the Himalayan 450. While this does not translate into a lot of weight savings, it will make a difference in the long run. The Roadster has a more comfortable ride with a seat height of 780 mm, while the Himalayan has a seat height of 845 mm. The Guerrilla is smaller in size and has wider tyres, which provides user-friendly dynamics.
