SC ports expand rail infrastructure in stable container

South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) continues to solidify its role as the logistics hub of the Southeast, supported by continued container throughput and significant rail infrastructure advancements.

SC Ports has three terminals capable of accommodating large vessels, a 52-foot-deep port (the deepest on the U.S. East Coast), and soon-to-be 10 million TEU capacity. The network includes two inland ports served by rail, as well as an inshore rail yard under development.

Progress is well underway on an intermodal facility at the Naval Base in the Port of Charleston that will greatly enhance rail operations. Site grading and utility work are nearly complete, and concrete paving and track construction at the intermodal yard are underway. The facility will be served by CSX and Norfolk Southern Airlines, increasing capacity and efficiency.

The expansion of the Greer Inland Port added more than 9,000 feet of rail and expanded the container yard. Two new rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTG) have arrived and are being assembled. The project aims to increase freight capacity and simplify logistics for customers.

“We are positioning ourselves for the long term to support our customers’ investments in the port market while consistently delivering reliable, efficient port services,” said SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin.

In fiscal year 2025, SC Ports has handled 467,686 terminal containers and 847,107 TEU since July 1, which remains stable compared to the previous year. In October alone, 114,883 terminal containers and 209,107 TEU were handled, down 11% year-on-year, partly due to the three-day shutdown along the coast.

The inland ports of Greer and Dillon reported 17,749 rail shipments in October, down 12% year over year. At the same time, vehicle shipments have surged, with 17,603 vehicles passing through the Port of Charleston in October, a 9% increase from last year. Cruise operations also had a strong month, handling 30,464 passengers, up 12% year-on-year.

Melvin added: “As a maritime community, we provide world-class service to our customers every day, ensuring the liquidity of their supply chains and the success of their businesses.”

With expanded rail infrastructure and solid operational performance, SC Ports is well-positioned to meet growing demand and solidify its position as a premier logistics gateway.
