- Shelby has installed a new 3.8-liter Whipple supercharger, intercooler and heat exchanger.
- Carbon fiber parts and 20-inch wheels make the GT500KR look more aggressive.
- There are only two GT500KRs in the erupted green metal, which is about to be auctioned.
The old Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is already a powerful guy – the 760 horsepower of the 5.2-liter supercharged engine is no joke. But if that’s not enough, Shelby American takes it to a notch with a more extreme variant of the GT500KR. Only 180 units have limited operational volumes in the 60 60 years of construction in 2022, and the unit is now heading to this month’s auction block. If you have deep pockets and a love for original muscles, keep reading.
This Mustang Shelby GT500KR is one of only two units made of eruptive green metal and looks absolutely brilliant. When building the KR, Shelby made extensive revisions to the legitimate work of the regular GT500 and created a new carbon fiber hood with a large number of air extraction vents. It also adds a carbon front splitter, carbon side skirt, Gurney flaps on the rear spoiler, and new 20-inch forged wheels.

What is more important with visual changes is mechanical upgrades. Shelby took the 5.2-liter V8 of the muscle car to the town and installed a new 3.8-liter Whipple supercharger, a reinforced intercooler and a new heat exchanger. There is also a cold air intake and a Borla Catback exhaust that helps the car pump out 900 hp. Not only is it 140 hp higher than the stock GT500, it is even 85 hp higher than the new track Mustang GTD. And all the power? It is sent specifically to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Shelby’s revisions did not stop there. The company also installed adjustable spring height, performance half-axis, recalibrated the Magneride suspension, mounted caster and tilt plates, and added Ford Performance Sway Bars. The star platinum metal cover stripes and trim contrasts with the car’s green paint.

Inside, Shelby didn’t relax. The interior is stripped for performance, rear seat removal and leather seats have been trimmed into added style. To complement the car’s erupted green metal exterior, there is a seat belt rod of the same color inside.
Mecum Auctions is dealing with the sale of this rare pony and it will be interesting to see how much it gets. When new, the GT500KR package added $54,995 to the price of the standard GT500. Considering the crazy upgrade, the price now seems almost quaint. If you are buying loud, fast and unique cars in the market, then this is a car worth watching. You can view the full list here.
